John Courtney Will

State of South Carolina, Darlington District

In the name of God, Amen, I John Courtney of the state and district
aforesaid, who being weak in body but of perfect sound mind and memory and
knowing that it is appointed for all men to die, do make and ordain this my
last will and testament in manner and form following (viz)

Item 1st:  It is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid.

Item 2nd:  I give unto my Beloved wife Barbary during her lifetime, my house
and plantation on the south side of the public road and Three Negroes (viz)
George, Amy, and Rosana, my Best horse and Buggy, Two Cows, and Calves Two
Bedsteds and Beds and furniture Six head of Sheep Ten Head of hogs and one
half of my household and Kitchen furniture Except the Beds and one half of my
Plantation tools During her lifetime and after the death of my wife, it is my
will and Desire that my Negro man George be lawfully appraised and that my
Daughter-in-law Elizabeth Courtney to take him, and pay two thirds of the
appraisement pay one third to my daughter Sarah Benton and pay one third to
my son Ezra Courtney and to have one third herself; and it is also my will
and Desire at the death of my wife that my Negro girl Rosana to belong to my
son Ezra Courtney During his lifetime and at his Death to belong to his
children, I also Devise that after the death of my wife that my Negro woman
Amy be sold and the money be given to my Daughter Sarah Benton, I also Devise
that after the Death of my wife that the Remainder of the property that I
give to her during her lifetime be Sold by my Executor, and Equally Divided
between my Son Ezra Courtney and my Daughter Sarah Benton Except the house
and plantation, that belong to my Son Ezra Courtney after the Death of my
wife.

Item 3rd:  It is my will and Desire that after my death that my Negro man
Sirous, and all the remainder of my personal Estate be sold by my Executors
and after paying all my Just Debts that the remainder go to my Daughter Sarah
Benton,

Item 4th:  I am not doing this in order to cut out my other children or their
Heirs for I have given them their full portion and Shear before,

Item 5th:  And lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint my two Beloved friends
Thomas Stephenson and JD Sansbury My Sole Executors to this my last will and
Testament, and I do hereby Revoke all  former wills by me made in witnesses
whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the second day of September in
the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and Sixty three and in the
Eighty seventh year of the independence of the State of South Carolina.
