A Brief History

The Linton Corner Cemetery is located on Route 109, about one mile below the village of Plaster Rock, New Brunswick.

It is one of the oldest cemeteries in the area, established as a "burying ground" before there was even a settlement in what is now known as Plaster Rock. An exact date is difficult to determine, but the oldest tombstone date is that of a William Margison, who died November 28, 1868, followed a year later by a young girl, Alma Linton, who died October 29, 1869.

A small church sits on the property, built by a Baptist congregation. Its date of construction is not known for sure,

but Mrs. Alice Smith, in a "History of Linton Corner", states the Bible on the altar of the church (in 1949) bore the following

inscription, "Presented by the East Florenceville Baptist Sunday School to the Tobique Valley Baptist Church",

December 25, 1898.

The cemetery was refurbished in, and the earliest written records date back to, 1949. At the time, families

were solicited for donations and a major upgrading project undertaken. Brush and weeds were removed, leveling and

landscaping done, and perpetual care established. The cemetery today is well maintained.

Its founding precept is that no one, regardless of colour or creed, will be denied burial here. The church is no

longer in use except for a yearly Memorial service held in August to honour the memory of those buried here, and to

help raise funds for cemetery maintenance.
