St. George news

    On Wednesday evening, Jan. 6, members of the Girls' Branch of the W.A. of St. Mark's Church entertained thirty members of the R.A.F., stationed at Pennfield Airport, and thirty young ladies of the town and vicinity. During the evening a sing-song was enjoyed and chinese checkers, monopoly and cards played. The lucky chair prizes were won by Miss May Stewart and L.A.C. T. Lewis of the R.A.F. Mrs. Stanley Herron and Mrs. Edgar Baldwin were in charge of the refreshments, and were assisted in serving the guests by Mrs. Hazen Spear and Mrs. Herbert Brown. Rev. B.T. Keith was general host for the evening.

Talk Of The Town

To Play At Pennfield

    Despite great obstacles, hockey is not entirely dormant in the community. A team in which the spark-plug is Phil McCarroll has been organized under the name of St. Stephen All-Stars and has made arrangements to meet an Air Force team at Pennfield next Sunday afternoon. The game will be played within the grounds of the air station.

Black's Harbour news (held from last week)

    A very enjoyable formal dance was held at the Harbourview Hotel in Black's Harbour on Friday evening when a committee of young ladies entertained their friends and a few members of the armed-forces, about thirty-five couples being present. The main dining room where dancing took place was tastefully decorated with garlands of shamrocks, top hats, and other St. Patrick emblems. Music was furnished by Watt's "Wanderers." A buffet lunch was served, the table being covered with a linen cloth centred with a bouquet of daffodils flanked by ivory tapers in silver candelabra. During the supper intermission music was voluntarily supplied by P.O. A. Corr, violin; Cpl. S.G. Hillier, piano; and L.A.C. W. Stone, all of the R.A.F. The committee in charge of arrangements were: Mrs. A.M.A. McLean, Mrs. D.M. Caldwell, Mrs. John Prebble and Miss A. Rose McKay.

    The "Excelsior Group" of the C.G.I.T. of the United Baptist church, sponsored an entertainment in the vestry of the church Friday evening, March 26. The program was opened by a prayer offered by Miss Anita Spinney, of the C.G.I.T. The entertainment was in the form of a radio broadcast, with Flight Sgt. Fred Stevenson as mast of ceremonies. The announcer was Miss Joan Patterson of the C.G.I.T.

   Flying Officer and Mrs. Kenneth Nuttall of Paris, Ontario left on Tuesday for Parrsboro, N.S. Mr. and Mrs. Nuttall spent the winter months in St. George and during their stay made many friends who regret their departure.

   Mr. and Mrs. James Cameron entertained twenty young people at their home on Wednesday evening in honor of L.A.C. Wally Stone, of the R.A.F., the occasion being his birthday. Games and dancing were enjoyed and at the close delicious refreshments were served by the hostess assisted by Miss Leah Cameron, Elaine Moses, Margaret McFarlane, Frances McDowell and Jean Barry.

   PILOT OFFICER MILTON Hansen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hansen of Lethbridge and formerly of Cardston, was killed this week with another airmen as their twin-motored plane crashed coming in for a landing at the R.C.A.F. station at Pennfield Ridge, N.B.

    PO. Hansen was 22. Born in Claresholm, he was raised and educated at Cardston, where he took an active part in sports. He took his air force training at Saskatoon and Prince Albert. His younger brother is also in the R.C.A.F.

TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES: P/O M.W. Hansen was part of Course No.14 (Pilots) at No.34 O.T.U., Pennfield Ridge. He was killed in crash of Ventura AE696 at the Pennfield Ridge Air Station aerodrome. 

   SGT. HARRY WALLACE TOOMBS , R.C.A.F., son of Wallace Toombs, of 114 2nd St. W., is missing on active service after air operations overseas, according to the R.C.A.F.'s 597th casualty list, released from Ottawa.

    He was a navigator on a Ventura bomber which became lost during a bombing raid over Amsterdam.

    Sgt. Toombs, 30, joined the air force in May, 1941, and took his training at Penfold, Currie Barracks, Calgary; Regina, and Penfield Ridge, N.B. He received his navigator's wings at Rivers and got an award at Paulson for taking the highest marks in his bombing class.

    He went overseas last November and had been operational flying since March. Born in Calgary, he attended James Short school and Central high school. He was a member of Central United church and played with the Rangers lacrosse team.

    He was employed by the Imperial Bank in Calgary and Eckville, and was on the staff of the Treasury branch in Camrose.

    Besides his father, he has three sisters, Mrs. Dudley Palmer, Mrs. Robert Hoagland, and Mrs. John West, all of Calgary; two brothers, Robert of South Bend, Indiana, and Lawrence, a private in the R.C.A.M.C., now at military hospital in Red Deer.

TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES: Sgt. H.W. Toombs was part of Course No.1 (Observers) at No.34 O.T.U., Pennfield Ridge. He was killed in action 3 May 1943 while serving with 487 Squadron.

PO. BERTRAM WM. GLICKMAN , 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Glickman of 4051 Marcli avenue, previously reported missing on active service, is presumed dead. PO. Glickman received his education at West Hill High School, and completed two years in the school of commerce, McGill University before enlisting in the fall of 1941. He received his wings and commission in February, 1942, having trained at Mountain View, Victoriaville, Chatham, and Pennfield Ridge, N.B. A month after graduation he went overseas. Later in England he volunteered for service on the African front. He was also a graduate of the Jewish Religious School, Shaar Shomayin Congregation, and a member of the junior congregation there. His father is a member of the firm Glickman and Glickman: his mother an active worker in the Jewish Next of Kin League.

TRANSCRIBER'S NOTES: P/O B.W. Glickman was part of Air Observers Course No.33 at No.2 ANS, Pennfield Ridge and was commissioned upon completion of the course. He was killed 12 December 1942 while serving with 38 Squadron.

   Sgt. Pilot Jimmy Barr, Glasgow, Scotland, stationed with the R.A.F., Pennfield, was a week-end guest of Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Inches.

 OFFICIAL NOTICE of the death of their eldest son, FS James M. Thomson, on active duty service with the R.C.A.F. overseas, has been received by Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Thomson of Milo.
    FS Thomson was born at Medicine Hat 21 years ago, and received his education in Milo high school, leaving school to join the air force. He was a Herald carrier boy for five years. He received his training at Edmonton, MacDonald, Man., and Pennfield Ridge, N.B., and went overseas last March. There are three brothers and a sister at home.

Commissioned  

   P/O. Aaron Glustein was a Sgt.-Observer when he went overseas, and received his Commission in England in August, 1942. He is now instructing observers. The first to volunteer and be accepted from New Waterford, Nova Scotia into the R.C.A.F., he graduated from Pennfield Ridge, N.B.
