Official announcement was made over the week-end of the
transfer of No.2 Air Navigation School, R.C.A.F., from Pennfield Ridge to
Rivers, Manitoba, where No.1 A.N.S. is being enlarged to absorb the entire
establishment which has been located at Pennfield since that field was
placed in service early in 1941. Unofficial reports have been heard for some
months past of the impending change, but it was not until Sunday that Air
Commodore A.B. Shearer, air officer commanding No.2 Training Command of the
R.C.A.F., made the official statement at Winnipeg.
The transfer is mutually regretted by residents of this
district and a considerable number of the Pennfield personnel who have been
welcome visitors at homes here and in other communities in Charlotte County. In
the past several days many of the airmen have called on friends in the County to
say good-bye and voice their regret that their duties now take them thousands of
miles away. The transfer of officers and men began before the official
announcement was made.
There has been so far no official statement of the use to be
made of the splendid facilities at Pennfield, but unofficial information is that
they are to continue in service.
