Between 300 and 400
airmen were present in the large "Y' auditorium, on Monday evening.,
November 24th, when a musical revue was presented under the sponsorship of the
Charlotte County Regional Committee, Saint John Council, Catholic Women's League
of Canada, for the pleasure of the officers and men at No.2 Air Navigation
School, Pennfield. The Charlotte County regional group comprised of the
subdivision of St. Stephen, Milltown, St. Andrews, Flume Ridge and Rollingdam,
with Mrs. George Carroll, St. Stephen, regional convener.
Sydney McLennan, Y.M.C.A. secretary, on behalf on the very
responsive and appreciate audience, extended a welcome to the concert party, and
after a brief introductory remarks by Mrs. Carroll, matters were put in the
hands of Ken Webber, St. Stephen, who acted as master of ceremonies. Ken was in
fine form, with a bunch of new stories, and a few of the old ones. The candle
story turned up bigger and better than ever, and made a great hit with the boys.
International Flavor
The program, arranged
under the direction of Mrs. Edmond Casey, was international in character,
artists from both sides of the border participating. This fact was commented on
as an evidence of the spirit of unity between our American cousins and ourselves
by Flight Lieutenant O'Leary, who at the close of the evening expressed the
thanks of the audience, calling for three cheers and a tiger which were given
with a will.
Those taking part were: Orchestra, Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Casey,
Red Nesbitt, Clayton Cameron, Leo Phelan; vocal solos, Pat Lyons, Sonny Unobskey,
Phillip McGarrigle; tap dance, Lois Coffey; violin solo, Edmond Casey;
monologue, Mrs. Donald Clark; saxophone solo, Red Nesbitt; character songs, Mrs.
Bessie Russell, and The Majorettes, in some of their snappy routines, with specialties
by Jean Hollingdale, Mary Smith and Lois Gordon.
Win Radio Quiz
The program closed with
a "radio quiz" conducted by Mrs. E.V. Sullivan and Miss Alice Ryan. Two teams, led
by Sergeant Dixon and Corporal Donnelly respectively, competed, the prizes (flat
50's of cigarettes) going to Sergeant Dixon's team, with a score of 21 as
against Corporal Donnelly's of 20. The losers were consoled with bunches of
"suckers".
Aubrey Dewar led the boys in group singing during the evening,
and as a final number gave them, "There'll Always Be An England," the
audience joining in the stirring chorus, just before swinging into "God Save The King."
Sick Not Forgotten
At the request of the
chaplain, Rev. R.J. McGillveray, several of the performers gave a little show
for the boys in the hospital who were unable to go to the entertainment.
Before leaving, the company was regaled with a delicious
buffet lunch, most attractively set out in the "Y' lounge.
The thanks of the committee is due to all who contributed to
the success of the enterprise, and to the following who generously provided and
drove cars for the trip: Capt, the Rev. H.F. Gillen, Stewart McKay, Miss Joan
Ganong, Mrs. Whidden Ganong, Arthur Unobskey, Paul Devlin, Marvin McCoomb,
Stanley Ayres; also to Jack Coyne, for posters.
