Snow Family Pictures circa 1910
John Noble forwarded the attached notes and pictures to me add to the Carleton County site -

"I recently came across some old pictures of the Snow and Noble families taken in Woodstock in 1910-11 ( the child sitting in the chair in the first is Florence Noble, who was born in 1909, so the date is either 1910 or 1911). I have identified all of the people in the two pictures in a spearate attachment: William R. Snow and Charles Beardsley Snow were sons of Joshua Snow and Sarah Dunphy Snow, a merchant in Woodstock, who was born in Granville, N.S. in 1810/11 and came to Wakefield Parish, Carleton County in 1815 with his father and mother, Edward and Sophia Snow. CB Snow's wife, Florence Eva (Anderson) Snow was born in Dublin, Ireland of Scottish descent.

The first Snow in North America was Nicholas Snow who arrived in Plymouth in 1623 on board the "Anne". He married Constance Hopkins, who came over on the "Mayflower" with her father, Stephen Hopkins in 1620. There were four consecuitive generations with a son named Jabez, who married a wife named Elizabeth. The fourth generation Jabez, served in the British Colonial Army as a Captain, who fought against the French in the Seven Year's War (1756-63) and he emigrated to Granville, Nova Scotia in 1762 with his wife Elizabeth to fill the lands vacated when the Acadians were expelled in 1755.  Several of their sons, including Edward and families came to Wakefield Parish, Carleton County in 1815 where they were granted land in the third tier back from the river.

My grandfather, Harry Gordon Noble and my grandmother Sarah May (Snow) Noble are in these pictures along with their first two children, Gordon and Florence.

William R. Snow, fought in the Civil War in the Maine Calvary and was one of the few survivors of his group. He was the Chief of Police in Woodstock and later ran a laundry there. He died tragically in a fire in the Quincy House Hotel in Boston in 1914, which is chronicled on pages 9 and 63 of your notes about Carleton County people on your web-site.

There is also attached a picture of C.B. Snow's grocery on Main Street in Woodstock which appeared in the 1999 Woodstock Historical Calendar as "circa 1865" (when he was only 20 years old), so I think the photo is considerable more recent than 1865, but I would love to be corrected on that."
