Lawson Searles Submitted by Mary Searles Hadley September 15, 2003

Lawson Searles Of Wilson’s Beach Killed In Normandy Action

First Campobello Boy To Make Supreme Sacrifice. Impressive Memorial Service Sunday.

---------------------

SON OF JAMES SEARLES

----------------------

Campobello, July 24 1944 —Campobello was brought more to realize the intense seriousness of this present earthly turmoil when on Monday last, James Searles of Wilson’s Beach received word that his son, Lawson, had been killed in action while serving in Normandy. This is the only Campobello boy yet ordained by fate to pay the supreme sacrifice in this war. Lawson was nearly 21 years of age. He enlisted in October 1942 and took his basic training at Fredericton and advanced training at Utopia, and went overseasin June 1943. He took further training inEngland until the invasion forces took departure for Normandy and Lawson was one of them. He is now gone, but his friends feel that Eternity must surely have much still in store for one who saw and knew so little of real and sufficient life in his brief career.

His mother died when he was very young and he struggled through childhood without the guidance of a mother’s kindly and loving care. Being poor and times being hard then, he knew only the bare necessities of life, never dreaming of luxury and under such circumstances one might wonder just why he would be moved to give his all that others might enjoy freedom and prosperity. He was engaged in an essential industry and might reasonably have sought exemption, but he saw his duty the hard way and took it.

Memorial Service

A memorial service was held at the Wilson’s Beach Baptist church on the morning of Sunday, July 23rd and the church was filled to capacity. The church was beautifully decorated with choice flowers and flags of the Allied Nations. (The anonymous donors of  the flowers requested that they be placed on his mother’s grave after the service, and this was done.) Seats were reserved for the mourners and they were all there. The choir sang “Onward Christian Soldiers” and “O God Our Help in Ages Past.” The pastor, Rev. R. Currie, delivered a most sympathetic and touching sermon built up around the two facts that he gave his life voluntarily without reserve and gave it in the fullest measure, nobly exemplifying and even emulating that greatest of Christian principles, that no man can have greater love than that he give his life for others.
