Paul H. Matthews Submitted by Heather Waddingham Added May 15, 2004

Paul H. Matthews (Campobello Island, NB) passed away unexpectedly on April 17, 2004 at his home in Wilson’s Beach. He was 55.

Born to Herbert Matthews and Marion Lank Matthews on March 29,1949 in Eastport, Maine, Paul spent much of his life on Campobello, leaving just long enough to voluntarily enlist and serve in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.

He worked most of his life in various segments of the fishing industry whether it be on a boat or as a night watchman for the Connor’s Bros. factory, but undoubtedly his greatest legacy was his large and eclectic circle of friends. Wherever there were people gathered for conversation, you could find Paul. And if there weren’t people to talk to face to face, his friends who knew him by his handle, “Sailor Boy”, would keep him company on his CB radio.

He was known and loved for his generosity; if there wasn’t money to give, he always had a helping hand he could lend. And he did. For people he knew his whole life or people that he met only long enough to help them change a tire. The lives affected by Paul’s infectious laugh and good natured temperament are immeasurable.

He didn’t live long enough to be a grandfather and, as an only child, he could have never been an uncle, but he found surrogate family members to fill the voids. His best friends’ children, Jenna Kinny and Jeremy Greene were perhaps one of the greatest joys in Paul’s life. Of Jeremy’s new baby sister Jessica, born on March 29th of this year Paul remarked that it was “the best birthday present he could have ever wished for.”

He is survived by his daughter Brandi of Chicago, Il, daughter Jennifer London of Hampton, NB, best friends (and cousin) Brent Kinney, Mac Greene and Rilda Kierstead, all of Campobello, special friend, Andrea Fitzgerald of Connecticut, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins and more friends than could ever be accounted for.

He will be truly missed.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday April 21 from 7 to 9 at the Wilson’s Beach Pentecostal Church, Wilson’s Beach. A Memorial Service will be held 2pm on Thursday from the church, with Rev. Todd McGuire officiating. For those who wish, donations to the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke, or to a charity of the donors choice would be appreciated.

Posted to the Funeral Home Site April 21, 2004

** On a "personal note" I met Paul last summer during our brief visit to Campobello. I wrote following when I learned of his sudden death. This letter was read at the funeral:

To the Family and Friends of Paul:

My name is Heather Waddingham, my family and I live in Kingston Ontario. The reason I am writing is I just heard about the sudden death of Paul and felt I had to write…

Last summer we were on Campobello and decided to go on a Whale Watching Tour.

The first day we went out was really foggy… couldn’t see anything but we had a good time… it was suggested we could try it again the following day. Again the next day was foggy in the morning but turned out nice around Noon…

Paul was with us on both occasions… he took a real liking to the kids (Kate and Brandon) and had they had a great time learning about the Whales, he told of how he and Mackie and once rescued a whale that had been caught up in fishing gear; and that by the time they got back to the wharf the media was there; he took a picture of the four of us on the boat, and gave me a “buoy” we had found that I now have hanging in my backyard . He even came by the Friar Bay Motel one night as we were packing to leave early the following morning to give us his best etc. We must have chatted again for another half hour or so.

On the second day before we left the wharf Paul made a point of “running home to get something”. He returned with a “ceramic seagull standing on a piece of driftwood”. Knowing from our previous days conversation he knew I that as a child growing up I spent a lot of time with family on Grand Manan. He presented me with the seagull saying he knew I would “appreciate it”. That I do, it is on display in my living room on top of a cabinet. A reminder of both Grand Manan and Campobello and now it has even more meaning knowing that the man who was kind enough to give to me …“a stranger from away”…is unfortunately no longer with us.

In any case, I just wanted to take the time to extend our sympathies to you on the loss of a father, friend and coworker. From what I have been told Paul was a friend to all and he will be greatly missed…

Sincerely, The Waddingham Family

Capt. Burris W. Matthews Submitted by Heather Waddingham Added October 2008

Source: Telegraph Journal April 24, 2008

MATTHEWS, CAPTAIN BURRIS W. - Surrounded by his daughter and granddaughters, Burris W. Matthews went to be with his Lord on April 21, 2008 after courageously weathering the effects of Alzhiemers for several years. The son of Clarence and Aggie (Dow) Matthews, he was born on Campobello Island on December 8, 1919, one of nine children. He was predeceased by his parents, brother and lifelong business partner, Medford Matthews and sisters, Betty Jackson, Royce Calder, Jewel Calder and Phyllis Babcock, all of Campobello. He is survived by sisters, Lorene Barteau of Deer Island, Della Mathews and brother, Ivan Matthews of Campobello.

Burris was married to Jean (Jackson) Matthews on Campobello. They built a house on the hill at the site of the "old school house", where they lived happily until Jean went to be with the Lord on Nov 3, 1986, and where Burris continued to live until shortly before his passing. Burris is survived by their daughter, Donna (Savage) Adams of Campobello; five grandchildren, Terri (Don) Brown, Susan (Jim) MacFeat, Angela (Joe) Stuart, Andrew (Heather) Savage, and Kim Savage; six grandchildren, Jim and Molly Brown, Erica and Heather MacFeat, and Brett and Jessica Stuart. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Steven Adams. Burris married his second wife, Norma Matthews, in January 1988 with whom he enjoyed nearly 20 years of companionship.

He is survived by Norma of Georgia; her children, Dianne (John) Speirs, Richard (Carrie) Davis and grandchildren, Paul (Laurie) Speirs, Tracy (Ronnie) Prince and great grandchildren, Jarod, Alex and Sydney and predeceased by Norma's son, Bobby (Gale) Davis. A small man with a tenacious work ethic, sharp mind and sometimes ornery determination, Burris was a fisherman who devoted his working life to the family business with his father and brothers, Medford and Ivan. They began fishing in small boats with their father in and around Campobello. Collectively they made significant contributions to the fishing industry, particularly purse seining. At the time of retirement they owned and operated two 120 foot steel purse seiners with state of art technology that they helped create.

Captain Matthews piloted ships safely through Head Harbor passage to Bayside for more than 20 years. A gifted navigator and boat handler, Burris earned the respect of many ships' Captains. He was as comfortable and capable in command on the bridge of a 750 foot ship as he was on a fishing boat. At age 75 he was still able to ascend the rope ladder on the side of a ship quickly and with ease. Burris was a man of faith who lived by example and who was truly devoted and committed to his family. Always willing to help, advice was given when requested, assistance was provided when needed and plain truth always revealed by his "twitting facts" and "the way I sees it", sometimes to make a point but always with his humorous wit which made those around him smile.

While saddened at his passing, everyone can find comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering and is at home with the Lord. He will be always remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. Services will be from Wilson's Beach Baptist Church on Friday April 25, 2008 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Robert Weaver. Visiting hours will be at Wilson's Beach Baptist Church on Thursday April 24, 2008 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting hours for family will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute to the Edith Lank Camp or Wilson's Beach Baptist Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of Humphreys Funeral Home, 20 Marks Street, St. Stephen, NB, (506- 466-3110). Online condolences may be placed at www.humphreysfh.com
