James Calder Obituary

The following information was provided by Ken McKeever. Ken feels that there could be some kind of relationship between the Calder and Mitchell's... possibly cousins. If you have any information supporting this theory, please drop him a line.

From the Eastport Sentinal February 2, 1878 (Vol. 60:11, page 2)

James Calder of Campobello was drowned on Friday last by the capsizing of a boat in Green Island Rip, near Head Harbor. He was one of the crew of the schooner Lookout of Lubec, which was returning from a fishing trip. One of the boats in tow by the schooner went adrift and in getting into another boat to recover the boat was capsized. Three of the number that were in the boat, Mitchell brothers of Campobello, were saved, but Calder met with a watery grave. Two of the brothers saved hung onto the bottom of the capsized boat for a long time before they could be rescued, the other having caught hold of another boat that was in tow. The deceased leaves behind a family of six.
