John Oscar Brown Submitted by John Skehan Added November 15, 2004

Died January 18, 1937 at Eastport, Maine

Funeral services for John O. Brown whose death occurred on Monday of last week were held at the home of his son, Oscar H. Brown, on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Melvin O. Hutchins of the Central Congregational Church officiated. The bearers were John A. Thompson, Roy H. Lurchin, Joseph E. Wickerson and Harry L. Follis. Many neighbors and friends were present, including a number from Wilson's Beach, Mr. Brown's former home.

He was a native of Wilson's Beach, having been born there on April 9, 1851, to James and Esther (Babcock) Brown. He was, therefore, nearing the end of his eighty-sixth year, a long , active and useful life, and one that covered a period of remarkable development in history and science. The Civil, Spanish and World Wars all occurred during this time. The several provinces of Canada formed the present Confederation, and became, to all intent and purpose, a great and independent nation. He witnessed the development of the telegraph, telephone, phonograph, automobile, radio and the heavier-than-air flying machine, and the thousand of minor inventions and improvements in the arts and sciences that have made modern living conditions so different from those prevailing during his boyhood. Of all these changes and events, he was always an interested and intelligent observer, as he was in local affairs.

Of an equitable and quiet disposition, he avoided anything in the nature of controversy, and he was one of those unusual men who win respect and friendship without seeming effort. Altho he had been retired for some years, he was a familiar figure about town, retaining until a few weeks before his death the active habits so characteristic of him, and he will be missed by many who valued his friendly greeting, his unfailing optimism and his quiet personification of the virtues of a generation now nearly passed away.

Mr. Brown removed to Eastport about 46 years ago and has resided here since. He is survived by his wife who was Miss Abbie E. Tinker, by two sons, Oscar H. and Ethelbert G., and one daughter, Mrs. Esther J. Kurzweil all of Eastport. There is also a brother Calvados Brown of Wilson's Beach.

Mr. and Mrs Brown had celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on Christmas Day, 1936.

She was born at Pembroke, Sept. 3, 1859, to Charlotte and George Tinker, and lived in Pembroke prior to her marriage, which took place nearly 62 years ago.  She went then to her husband's home at Wilson's Beach, but about 52 years ago they removed to Eastport, remaining here since.
