Accomplishments of the
Mining Your History Foundation

The Mining Your History was formed in 1994 as a loosely structured committee to hold the First West Virginia Mining Your History Conference in October of that year at The Cultural Center in Charleston. The conference was a huge success with 305 persons in attendance. Proceeds were used to purchase the microfilm of the service records of all Union soldiers who served from what became/is West Virginia in the Civil War.

In 1995, the committee formulated by-laws and was incorporated under the laws of West Virginia as Mining Your History Foundation. Application is pending for 501(c)3 status from IRS.

During 1995, MYH held workshops in Moorefield, Jackson's Mill, Wheeling, and Huntington and Mining Your History: A West Virginia Homecoming Conference in September in Charleston. Nearly 500 persons attended at least one of these. Proceeds from the workshops were dedicated to the activities of the societies in the areas where they were held. Proceeds from the state conference are in escrow for future use by the Foundation.

In the past few years, Mining Your History has raised money to purchase the 1930 census, to replace old and damaged microfilm, and to purchase books and microfilms for West Virginia counties and surrounding states. The Foundation also co-sponsors West Virginia History Day and Hoot Owl Research at the Library.
