  • To promote the study of genealogical and historical research within the State of Montana.
  • To encourage accuracy and thoroughness in research.
  • to encourage, motivate and instruct members in ethical principals, scientific methods and effective techniques of research and to defend the standards of genealogy from incompetent and disreputable persons.
  • To assemble and maintain computerized or other lists of records and holdings of member societies which will help members and the public in their research.
  • To promote conferences, seminars, and workshops on genealogical research and other research as may be of assistance to members.
  • To encourage establishment of member societies of the state society under the terms and conditions as the bylaws of the society may provide.
  • To promote and encourage member society projects to locate, index, and preserve public and private genealogical records which will be available to members and the public.
  • To provide a repository for such material of a genealogical nature as people may wish to donate to the society - books, records, pictures, diaries, Bibles, etc.
  • To achieve the foregoing objectives, funds may be raised and donations, gifts, legacies, and bequests accepted.
