Washington D Segler

Washington D. Segler was born ca1811 in S.C.; married Louisa Elizabeth (Eliza) Unknown bef 1834 in S.C. Washington and Eliza were in Edgefield Co., S.C. in 1840; on the 1841 Choctaw Co., Ms. State Census. In John F. Johnson’s diary, he made a notation in 1856 stating that W. D. Segler was one of his friends. In 1859 Mr. Johnson went to Grenada to sell cotton and was accompanied by W. D. Segler. In Aug 1863, in the diary of Mr. Johnson, Benjamin L. Swan and his wife Caroline, made bond to John F. Johnson and Washington D. Segler for $1632. New Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Records show Wash to be very action and sometimes served as moderator at church meetings. The 1880 Sumner (now Webster) census shows Wash and wife, Eliza, age 67 and born in S.C. There was 1 son and 2 grandchildren living in this household with Wash – Martha and Livinia Singleton. I believe these to be the children of Louisa Matilda Segler Singleton. Believe the son, John, age 21, is probably the grandson, John Wesley Segler. Wash’s son, James Randolph Segler is living next door on the census. Around 1860 a petition was sent to Federal Postal service, petitioning for a post office to be established at Lamb, MS. and it was requested that W. D. Segler be appointed as the postmaster, using his residence as the post office.  Wash died on a Saturday night, Rev. B. R. Hughey preached his funeral and used the text Job 14:14: “If a man dies, shall he live again?”.  On a trip to Eupora, Albert Latham took us on a tour of the cemeteries and on our stop at New Ebenezer Presbyterian Church and Cemetery, he point out five graves which he stated that Billy Morrow had told him – were Segler graves. John F. Johnson’s journal identifies some of the gravesites. Among the eight are believed to be Wash and Eliza Segler and children, Joseph and Caroline Segler. Mr. Johnson’s diary identifies Eliza as assisting Dr. Johnson in the delivery of Mary Adelaide Johnson, daughter of John F. Johnson. The children of Washington and Eliza (Unknown) were: Martin W. Segler b. 1834 and m. Eliza Jane Lamb in 1853; Mary Lucinda Segler b ca1836 and d. 1864; Daniel Newton Segler b ca1839 and d. ca1878 m. Nancy Weaver; Joseph H. Segler b ca1840 and d.
