Tallahatchie Co., MS Confederate Muster Rolls; "Boys in Gray" THE CIVIL WAR "Tallahatchie County has seen her men serve in every war since its creation. Tallahatchie County's "Boys in Gray", served in the Mexican War, Spanish American War, two World Wars, the Korean Conflict, Viet Nam, and Persian Gulf War. No matter what the call, her men were always willing to serve their Country and County." "These pages are dedicated to those "BOYS IN GRAY", who served their Country. Because of men like these, we enjoy freedom today. The period of reconstruction in Tallahatchie County followed the Civil War, or as most people called it "THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES". One can not help but admire these men. The sacrifices, and deeds of valor are above and beyond what a normal person would do. These were extremely trying times. Their Faith and courage was stretched to the limit. When they returned home they found the County in confusion, broke and no government. The carpet baggers had ruled the County from the end of the war until 1875. They pillaged the homes, sold many homes for taxes, and wreaked havock throughout the county. But, in 1875 Tallahatchie County was redeemed. James A. Dogan, was the first democratic sheriff with an earnest desire to serve and save. The men of Tallahatchie County redeemed the County. A democratic government was established, and its affairs re-built. These men labored under circumstances more adverse than the people of the so-called depression of 1921- 1933. Yet with determination, their sacrafices and endurance, but most of all their FAITH in God, we now enjoy freedom." OATH TO THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA We solemnly swear that we will support the Constitution of the Confederate States of America and the Constitution of the State of Mississippi so long as we continue citizens there of and that we will faithfully discharge to the best of our abilities the duties of the office of members of the Board of Police of said County according to law. So help us God. James M. Duncan W.D.Roan Wm.R.Boothe E.B.Robinson 1861 Volunteer Soldiers, Confederate States Of America This is a list of the units in which Tallahatchie Co. soldiers served. These were his uncles and grandfathers. Dillon, William Carrol was captured and imprisoned, the family still does not know when or where, but while in prison he contracted small pox and was released. He went home to see his wife and childen, but could not go into the house because of the disease. He died in 1863. Their place was called "Pine Hill Plantation", and was located about four miles from Oakland. When Captian Dillon died and the war ended they lost their land. Tom said his greatgrandmother never got over it. Holsouser, A.J.-served with Jeff Thompsons's Command, and was captured on June 1, 1862, in Memphis. He was imprisoned in Camp Douglas, Illinois until Sept. 30, when he was released upon taking the "Oath of Alleiance". Neely, John Thomas, brother of Pallas. Served with CoF 21st Ms. He lost his leg in the battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. He went home. Neely, Pallas A.J.-Served with Co L 5th Ms Calvary. He was captured on Dec 16, 1864 during the battle of Nashville. He was imprisoned at Camp Chase, ohio until March 31, 1865. He was released upon taking the "Oath of Allegiance". He went to work for thePeacock Sawmill company in Charleston. He then moved to Lake Country, Tennessee, where he drowned at age 30 in Reelfoot Lake. Tom states that his grandfather was only 6 months old when this happened. How ironic that someone could live though a war and then die an a swimming accident. This information was sent to me by Dick-He has the documentation of the following men, Isaac Dunn, born 1836-Yazoo or Carroll Co, enlised Feb. 27, 1862, Pvt. Co K, 30th Ms Inf. He was wounded in the battle of Murphreesboro Tn., sent home to recup, returned to duty and was killed in action 10-1-1863. John W. Yewell listed as missing in action 11-24-1863 during the engagement on LookOut Mountain-he was a member of Co K, 30th Ms. He was listed as being captured at LookOut Mountain 11-24-1863, he was sent to Louisville Prison Camp and later sent to Rock Island Barracks, Ill. He arrived there 12/14/1863 and died on 6/22/1864. He is buried in grave plot 1265. Norman M. Yewell, Co K-30th Ms, Enlisted 03-03-1862, at Carrollton Ms. He also listed as captured at Lookout Mountain 11-24-1863. It is thought that he would not leave his brother. He was first sent to Louisville and then sent back to Rock Island Barracks, Ill. He was sent to New Orleans and exchanged 5/23/1865. His last application for pension was dated 6/21/1924. Some of this roster came from the WPA files and some of it came from "A History of Tallahatchie County"-Compiled by Lillie Neely Henry. It is used with permission from her family. They felt as I do that Mrs. Henry would feel honored that we use some of her writings. She most likely took the rosters from the WPA files also. She had missed some, as is very easy to do when you are indexing those records, and sometimes the mocrofilm isn't clear. This material based partly on information in a booklet made by the Tallahatchie Chapter,Mississippi State Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Organized November 21, 1958. The Military Roster was taken from the records of the Chancery Clerk's office at Charleston. Mrs. Lillie Neely Henry was Chancery clerk there. The booklet was Compiled by: Mrs. Lillie Neely Henry, Chancery Clerk at Charleston, Ms, and Edited by, Jean Conger May. The Mississippi Sun of Charleston Mississippi is listed as Publisher. Our deep appreciation to those of you who have given us additional names and helped us by given the correct spelling to some of the names, although you may know a name should be spelled differently from the way it is listed we can not, by law change the way it was on the State Census. Jim Taylor and Tom Neely are among those who have helped with corrections.
