Charleston- CHARLES L. SMITH "Bobby", age 55, heavy equipment operator, died Monday, December 27, 1994, at his home in Enid. Rev. Gary Hankins conducted services 11 A.M., Wednesday, December 29, 1994 at the Womble Funeral Home Chapel. The Hanks Family provided the sacred music. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Odie Mae Presley Smith, four daughters, Glinda Rena Cook of Columbus, Teresa Jo Smith of Tupelo, and Elizabeth Ann Smith of Enid, five sisters, Ilene Dees of Enid, Jean Johnson of Water Valley, Christine Brown of Toledo, Ohio, Mary Bunch of Horn Lake and Pearl Boyles of Water Valley, five brothers, Delmer Smith, Lester Smith and James Smith, all of Atlanta, GA. and Wilson Smith of Horn Lake and seven grandchildren. Pallbearers were Gerald Clayton, David Johnson, Randy Parks, Jeff Smith, Mike Smith and Ronnie Smith.

Clarksdale-HENRY THOMAS VAUGHN, SR. age 80, died Monday, December 27, 1994, at Lackey Memorial Hospital in Forest. Dr. Thomas Tutor officiated services 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 1994 at Oakhurst Baptist Church in Clarksdale with burial in Rosemound Cemetery in Tutwiler with a Masonic Graveside service. McNeil-Nowell Funeral Home of Clarksdale had charge of arrangements. He was a retired engineer for Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge F & AM #535, Tutwiler and honorary member of Clarksdale Lodge, a member of Order of Eastern Star, Clarksdale, Chapter #115 and a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife , Mrs. Colleen Vaughn of Clarksdale, two sons, William Darrell Vaughn of Cleveland and Henry T. Vaughn, Jr. of Jackson, one daughter Fredna Pearson of Tutwiler; one brother, Rev. A.R. Vaughn of Forest; four sisters, Lilla Mae Bailey of Sparta Tenn., Jewell Moncrief of Kenner, LA, Harriet Boozer of Forest and Quida Petrowskey of Tampa, FL; 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Charleston-FLOYD JONES, 72 of St Petersburg, FL., formerly of Charleston, retired tool and die maker, died Wednesday, January 12, 1994, in St. Petersburg. Services were 2 p.m. Sunday, January 16, 1994 at Newsom Funeral Home in Charleston with burial in Magnolia Gardens. He leaves a daughter, Anita Kay Marsano of St. Petersburg; a son, Wayne Jones of Jacksonville, FL.; three sisters, Beatrice Roach, Mattie Jean Young and Juanita Holland, all of Charleston; two brothers, A. J. Jones and Tommy G. Jones , both of Madison and a grandson.

Services were 1 p.m., Friday, January 21, 1994 aat New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Batesville with burial in New Bethlehem Cemetery. Henderson Funeral Home of Sardis had charge. The husband of Velma Walls of Courtland, he is survived also by two sons, Keith Walls and Allen Hines, both of Courtland; two daughters, Sharon Johnson of Courtland and Carolyn Flimmes of Oxford; three sisters, Essie Bobo of Courtland, Betty Sanford of Milwaukee and Nessie Pugh of Detroit and three brothers, Harford Walls, Jr. of Detroit and Leland Walls and Marvin Walls, both of Courtland.

Philipp-MILDRED COLE MEEKS CALDWELL, 83, retired artist, died Sunday, January 16, 1994, at her grandaughter home in Brandon. Services were 2 p.m., Wednesday, January 19, 1994, at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home of Greenwood with burial in Teoc Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Greenwood. She had been a housemother at Mississippi State University and was a member of Philipp Methodist Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Caldwell, the widow of Nathan Troy Caldwell, leaves two sons, William M Meeks of Yazoo City and Robert L Meeks of Geneva, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Lucretia Farris of Fort Worth,Tx, and Patsy Aucoin of Jackson. two sisters, Marion Brown of Vicksburg and Edna Proctor of Ethel; a brother, J.D. Cole of Clinton, and 12 grandchildren.

Charleston-EMME KIRKWOOD GREER, 90, died Tuesday, January 11, 1994, at Tallahatchie General Hospital. Rev L.C. Blue conducted funeral services Saturday, January 15, 1994 at 1 p.m. at Riverview Headstart Center in Philipp. Burial was at Holly Grove Cemetery in Philipp. Benevolent Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs Greer was a member of Solomon Chapel M.B. Church at Philipp. The widow of John Greer, Mrs. Greer was preceded in death by five of her 13 children. She is survived by five daughters, Mary Greer of Chicago, Earnice Kinsey of Memphis, Dorothy Brown of Charleston, and Tomella Williams and Elizabeth Kimbrough, both of Gary, Ind.; three sons, Ben Greer of Greenwood, Charlie Greer of Philipp and Herschel Greer of Chicago; 38 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 13 greeat-great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Friendship Church of God Cemetery in Enid. Ms. Cunningham is survived by a son, Zane Cunningham of Jackson; a brother, Wade Bailey of Yazoo City; three sisters, Meshea Bailey of Madison, and Matasha Harris and Sonya Land of Jackson;her mother Gale Land of Jackson; her father Perry Cunningham fo Cascilla;her stepfather, Cecil D. Land of Jackson; Her grandmother, Elsie Trusty of Cascilla and her grandfather, Glenn Crenshaw of Charleston.

BENNIE ALEXANDER WARE, 79, died, Friday December 31, 1993, at Oberton Park Health Center in Memphis. Mrs Ware was a housewife. The funeral was a 1 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 1994, at Newsom Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Buster Thomas officiating. Burial was in Magnolia Gardens Cemetery in Charleston. Mrs. Ware was the widow of Shurford Ware. She is survived by three sons, Buster Alexander of Lake Village, AR., Clarence Alexander of Joliet, IL;, and Marvin Alexander of Baton Rouge, LA; six daughters, Ruby Alexander of Memphis, Louise Alexander of Fort Worth, TX, Dolly Scallions of Greenville, Mattie Davis of Lambert, Brenda Griffin of Oakland and Bertha Calder of Grenda; three sisters, Ruby Stuart and Winnie Thompson of Cleveland and Maude Spells of Orlando, FL; two brothers, Clint Hunt of Pittsburg and Archie Hunt of Florence and 32 grandchildren.

MARGIE MAGDALENE WINTERS, 64, died, Friday December 31, 1993, at her residence in Hardy. Mrs Winters was a housewife and was a member of Turkey Foot Fork Church of God of Prophecy. Services were 2 p.m., Saturday January 1, 1994, at Adams Arbor Church of God of Prophecy in Paynes with the Rev. Ray Whitten officiating. Burial was in New Smith Cemetery in Cascilla. Mrs. Winters is survived by her husband, Ray Winters of Hardy; three sons, Charles Winters and Terry Winters of Parchman, and Ronnie Winters of Hardy; four brothers Henry Winters of Charleston and James Winters, Ed Winters and Jessie Winters of Holcomb; a sister, Dovie Smith, three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were 8 p.m. Tuesday January 4, 1994 in the west chapel of Smith Mortuary, Maryville, Tenn with Rev. David Webster and Rev. James Carr officiating. Interment was 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, 1994,at Grandview Cemetery in Maryville. She was a member of East Maryville Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Meek L. Carter; sons David W. Carter of Gatlinburg, Paul Carter of Maryville; daughter Lanita Boykin of Clinton; sisters, Christine Price Lutrell and Stella Ruth Tribble, both of Senatobia, Janie Armstrong of Enid, Joan Mooney of Water Valley and 4 grandchildren.

Oakland, MS-LELIA ELODIA SWEARENGEN, 88, retired employee of Oakland Bank, died Thursday, January 6, 1994 at Grenada Lake Medical Center. Graveside services were 1 p.m. Sunday in Oakland Cemetery. Garner-Harper Funeral Home of Grenada had charge. Miss Swearengen was a 1922 graduate of Yalobusha County High School and worked as a teller in the old Bank of Oakland before she became and insurance broker. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Olvis, Benjamin, William "Willie" and Wylie, amd by her sister, Mary. Miss Swearengen is survived by two nephews.

Charleston, NANCY BELL GRISSOM, 93, a homemaker, died Wednesday, January 26, 1994, at the Tallahatchie Extended Care Facility. Rev. J. G. Thomas conducted funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday January 28, 1994 at the Womble Funeral Home Chapel in Charleston. Mrs Donna Burkhalter and Mrs Carol Hargett provided the sacred music. Burial was at Magnolia Gardens Cenetery at Paynes. Born at Mantee on November 15, 1900, she lived in the area for 20 years and was a member of Mantee Baptist Church. She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Iva Grimsley of Maben, Mrs Olene Roberts of Charleston and Mrs Mamie Elizabeth Brewer of Mountain Home Ark., and a brother, Joseph M. Grissom of Pearl. Pallbearers were Chuck Grimsley, Mike Roberts, Randy Roberts, Ronnie Roberts, Carl Willmer Jr. and Larry Willmer. The family requests any memorials be sent to the Tallahatchie Extended Care Facility at Charleston.

Charleston-NORRIS WOLFE, 68, of Charleston, formerly of Memphis, retired foreman for a meat packing plant, died Monday, January 24, 1994, at his home after a long illness. Services were Thursday, January 27, 1994, at Paynes Baptist Church, where he was a member and burial was in Magnolia Gardens Cemetery. He was a deacon for 28 years at Leaclair Baptist Church in Memphis and also a deacon for 2 years at the Paynes Baptist Church. The husband of Mildred Wolfe, he leaves two daughters, DeNorris Avent of Memphis and Wanda Mills of Bartlett; four sisters, Euvie Denley of Cleveland, Betty Sue McQueen of New Bern, N.C.; a brother Wyatt Wolfe, Jr. of Memphis, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Tillatoba-CARL WINFORD PRYOR, age 69, retired edger for Binswanger Mirror Co. and a former employee of Pet Milk Co., died Sunday January 16, 1994 ,at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis. He was a member of Tillatoba Baptist Church and an Army Sergeant during World War II. Rev Gary Adams conducted services 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 25, 1994, at Womble Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs Louanne Cossar, organist solist, presented the sacred music. Interment was in the Union Cemetery at Tillatoba. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Paula Massey of Marion, Ark.; one son Roger Pryor of Water Valley and one half-brother, Jessie Fly of Charleston, and three grandchildren. Pallbearers were Sonny Hayward, George Keyhold, Homer Melton, Jerry Shaw, John Tilman and Larry Whiteside.

Grenada- GERALD CARLISLE, 48, died Friday, January 21, 1994, at Grenada Lake Medical Center. Services were 10:30 a.m. Monday January 24, 1994, at Garner-Harper Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Paul Cemetery in the Rosebloom Community. A Vietnam War-Air Force veteran he was a supervisor at the Heatcraft in Grenada and belonged to Goldwing Road Riders. He was a native of Charleston. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Patsy Tharp Carlisle of Grenada; two daughters, Stefanie Carlisle, Holly and Wanda Carlisle of Grenada; his mother, Mrs Dorothy Carlisle of Charleston; one brother, William Ernest Carlisle, Jr.; and two sisters, Minnie Rutledge of Grenada and Judy Miller of Charleston. Pallbearers were Danny Rutledge, David Miller, Lee Troutt, Lee Holly, Oakley Tharp, Jr., Danny Tharp and Walter Tharp.

Charleston-EMMA SUSIE SMITH, age 86, retired from former interest in farming and real estate, died Friday, March 4, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford. Rev. Gary Adams and Rev. J.G. Thomas conducted services 2 p.m., Sunday, March 6, at the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Cindy Brougher, pianist, presented the sacred music. Interment was in the Charleston Cemetery with Womble Funeral Home in charge of arrangments. A member of the Charleston First Baptist Church, she was also the former secretary and treasurer of the T.E.L. Sunday School Class. She was an active member of the Business and Professional Women's Club where she previously held the office of secretary. The widow of Erma Lee Smith, Sr., she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Emily Etheridge and Mrs Eleanor Worsham, both of Charleston; one sister, Mrs. Loy Champion of Oxford, 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Buddy Etheridge, Stacey Etheridge, Gene Smith, Johnny Smith, Lee Smith, and Steve Smith. Family requests any memorials to be sent to the Tallahatchie Extended Care Facility or the Charleston First Baptist Church.

Charleston-NETTIE NEWTON BRADERA, 99, homemaker, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, of heart failure at Tallahatchie General Hospital. Services were 10 a.m., Thursday, March 3. at Newsom Funeral Home burial in Smith Cemetery in Cascilla. She was member of Charleston First Baptist Church. Mrs. Bradera, the widow of Dan Bradera, leaves six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Tutwiler-OPHELIA P. STEED, 70, of Jackson, retired registered nurse, died Friday, March 11 of respiratory failure at Mississippi Methodist Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Jackson. Services were 11 a.m. Monday March 14, at McNeil-Nowell Funeral Home of Tutwiler with burial in Jenkins Cemetery here. Mrs. Steed leaves a daughter, Joyce Morris of Jackson,; a son John M. Steed of Webb; a sister Lula P. Hicks of Webb and Eunice P. Floyd; a brother, James G. Pennington of Webb and four grandchildren.

Vicksburg-BEATRICE F. SCALLIONS, 63, homemaker, died Monday, March 7, of heart failure at Parkview Regional Medical Center. Services were 10 a.m. Thursday, March 10, the Vicksburg Church of God of Prophecy where she was a member, with burial in green Acres Memorial Park. Glenwood Funeral Home of Vicksburg had charge. Ministers were Rev. Billy Adams and Rev. Robert Walker. Mrs Scallions, a native of Charleston, and been a resident of vicksburg since 1953. She is survived by her husband, Raymond Scallions of Vicksburg; three sons, Raymond Scallions, Jr., Michael Scallions and Darrell Scallions, all of Vicksburg one daughter, Deborah Carol Cummings of Vicksburg; three brothers, Henry Ford of Charleston, Jack Ford of Glendora and W.B. "Son" Ford of Vicksburg; two sisters, Ruth Ford of Charleston and Ruby Ford of Charleston; nine grandchildren 5 step-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Raymond Scallions, James Ford, James Edwards, Harry Ford, Larry Ford and Randy Ford.

Charleston- Doshia Pauline Ross, age 88, homemaker, died Sunday, March 1,1998, at Tallahatchie General Hospital of heart disease. Services were 2 P.M. Tuesday March 3, at Stonefield Church of God near Cascilla with burial in the church cemetery. Newsom Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Born September 7, 1909, she is survived by a daughter, Mary Alice Green of Rogers, AR and a son, Roy Ross of Nesbit and 6 grandchildren.

ANNIE LOU BRUNSON, age 96, born December 30, 1897, at Paul community, Tallahatchie County, died Thursday, February 3, 1994 at Grenada Lake Medical Center. Rev. Gary Adams conducted greveside services 3 p.m. Friday February 4, 1994, at the Charleston Cemetery. Womble Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. A lifelong resident of Charleston, she married Charlie McWilliam Brunson in1918. Together they owned Brunson Barber and Beauty Shop in Charleston until they retired in 1961. After Mr. Brunson's death in 1970, she continued to live in her Charleston home until she became a resident of Grandview Health Care Center of Grenada in 1990. She was an active member of the Charleston First Baptist Church and the business & Professional Women's Club. She is preceded by a daughter, Hazel Street of Memphis; four brothers and four sisters of which she was the eldest. She is survived by two children, Charlsie Baucum of San Antonio, Texas adn Charles M. Brunson of Pine Bluff, Ark. and 6 grandchildren. The family request any memorials be sent to the Charleston First Baptist Church.

CLEVELAND PRICE WHITEN, 79, homemaker, died Thursday, February 17, 1994 of apparent heart failure at Bright Glade Convalescent Center in Memphis, where she had been a resident for 2 years. Services were Saturday, February 19, 1994,at the First Baptist Church in Charleston, where she was a member, with burial in Charleston Cemetery. Rev. Donald O'Quin, assisted by Rev. Gary Adams officiated at her funeral services, with Mrs. Linda Sayle Allison, organist and Mrs. Sue Shaw, soloist. Newsom Funeral Home has charge. She was a native of Tupelo, the daughter of Lena Payne Price and Cleveland H. Price. She moved to Charleston in 1950. She held numerous civic and church positions, including the Business and Professional Women's Club, which she held local, district and state positions. She was a State ?Federation President in 1966. She also, was involved with the Magnolia Garden Club, serving as president locally, as well as being a state officer. Mrs. Whitten belped organize and served as president of the Mississippi Tuberculosis Association. Mrs. Whitten, the widow of Harry Rivers Whitten, leaves a stepdaughter, Ann Cox and a sister, Nancy P. Enochs, both of Memphis, two grendchildren and five great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Isaac Whitten Sayle, Ray Denman Cox, Jr., Joseph Webb Cox, Kenneth "Skimp" Davis, J. B. Spencer, Jr., and Michael Glenn Fox. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, any memorials be sent to First Baptist Church of Charleston or Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis.

Mrs. Smith leaves tweo daughters, Darlene King of Holcomb and Kathy Jean Ware of Grenada; a son, Richard Earl Smith of Cascilla; her motherk Edna King Grantham of Cascilla; three sisters, Rosemary Vaughn of Grenada, Dianne Gammill of Clarksdale and Tammy Tillman of Tillatoba and two grandchildren.

Charleston- NELLIE JONES MOORMAN, age 90, widow of Dexter Moorman, died Friday, February 18, 1994, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. Wesley Arabie, Charleston Church of Christ minister, conducted services 2 p.m., Sunday February 20, 1994 at the Womble Funeral Home Chapel. Mrs. Connie Darby, soloist and congregational hymns led by Mr. Arabie provided the sacred music. Interment was in the Charleston Cemetery. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Willie Mae Farris, Mrs. Dorothy Fowler, Mrs. Peggy Patton, Mrs. Mildred Alexander, Mtrs. Mary Bethune, all of Charleston; two sons, Harvey Moorman of Charleston and Wison Moorman of Nesbit,; one sister Mrs. Ruby Pastorella of Tampa Fla. and 20 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Willie Fowler, Larry Irby, Ricky Irby, J. R. Jackson, Walter Mercer and James Still. Family requests any memorials be sent to the Tallahatchie Extended Care Facility.

Philipp-MABEL MARIE JEFFORDS AVENT, 81, homemaker and former employee of Conmar Zipper Co.,died Friday February 11, 1994, of cancer aat Greenwood-Leflore Hospital. Services were 2 p.m. Monday February 14, 1994 at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home with burial in Magnolia Garden Cemetery in Paynes. She was a member of Philipp Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for more that 50 years. She leaves a daughter, Betty Sue Avent McGregor of Sumner; a son Arlie Ray Avent of Hernando; four sisters, Cordea Cooper of Michigan, Gladys Baker of Muskegon, Mich., Opal B. Council of Paducah, Ky., and Bessie Johnson of Southaven, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Drew-GREGORY A. HOLDEN, 23, formerly of Drew was killed Friday, Feb. 6, 1994, as a result of an explosion while working in Ft. Payne, Ala. The Funeral service was held at Scott Funeral Home in Chatman, Va. on Friday, Feb. 11, 1994. He leaves his wife, Danielle Holden, one son, Daniel and one daughter, Kayla Michelle of Chatman, Va.; his parents, Frank and Nina Holden of Drew and Dee Mullins of Memphis; one brother Chris McNulty of Colorado Springs; his grandmother Lucille Browning of Webb and grandparents Mr. and Mrs. M. A. McNulty of Drew.

Grenada-MICHAEL BRADLEY WILSON, 10 year old son of Mary Alice and Jack Benjamin Wilson, died Friday, Feb. 18, 1994 at LeBonheure Children's Medical Center in Memphis after an auto accident. Services were 2 p.m., Sunday Feb. 20, 1994 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Grenada wiith burial in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Garner-Harper Funeral Home had charge. He also leaves a sister, Amy Michelle Wilson, and a brother, Jack Benjamin Wilson, II, both of Grenada; his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rounsaville and Rose Wilson of Grenada, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Wilson, III of Duck Hill; and his great-grandparents, Henry G. Wilson, II of Duck Hill and Mr. and Mrs. Benford McGarrity of Charleston.

He was a career Air Force Veteran having retired after 20 years of service. He served all over the U.S., Europe, and the Far East including two tours of duty in Vietnam. After retiring from the Air Force, he established the American Drilling Company of Howard County. he ws involved in Civic Activities and local government, having served for 8 years on the Colorado School District (RE-3) Board of Education. He is survived by his wife, Barbara F. Dewberry of Howard, a daughter; Gay Dewberry of Tucson, Ariz.' two sons, Bradford (Bo) Dewberry of Howard and Christopher Dewberry of Denver, Col.; one sister, Gertrude Cook of Scobey and one brother, A. Shelton performed services Wednesday, April 27, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, where she was a member and served as class leader and stewardess, with burial in the Oliver Cemetery in her native hometown of Louisville. Century Funeral Home of Greenwood was in charge. Pallbearers were the stewards of St. Paul Church. Mrs Hill taught for 26 years at the Charleston Elementary School. She was a graduate of Coahoma Junior College and Mississippi Valley State University and did further study at Alcorn State and Delta State Universities. She was a member of the Mississippi Association of Educators and served for a number of years as youth director for the Business and Professional Women's Little Sisters Club. Mrs. Hill is survived by a daughter, Elma Jean Hill; a son Hirouth Hill; her mother, Odell Bozeman; and a grandson, all of Charleston.

He was a member of the Board of the Tallahatchie County Bank, former President of the East Tallahatchie School Board, past President of the Tallahatchie Country Club, and President of North Tillatoba Drainage District. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Heinline Sayle; one daughter, Sally Sayle Weathersby of Memphis; one son David Bardwell Sayle of Charleston; two step-daughter, Ann Heinline of San Francisce, Calif. and Patricia H. Sumner-LUCILLE CROWDER FLEMING, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Mrs Fleming, born in Tallahatchie County in 1909, was a resident of Sumner for many years, where she worked in the home of Judge Joseph Albert May and later his daughter's family, the Adyn Schuylers. After moving to Tutwiler she remained active in church and community activities. She was renowned for her artistic quilts, some of which are in collections in New York and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture in Oxford. Services were held at Friarson Chapel, where she was a lifelong member, at Sumner on Sunday, Aug., 28, at 10 a.m. with burial following at the Old Antioch Cemetery in Sumner. The Tutwiler Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

A native of Charleston, he retired from the Postal Service after 31 years of service. Jackson-ROY D. BYARS, JR., 75 , of Briarfield Road, died Srpt. 27 at the Mississippi Baptist Medical Center from heart failure. Wervices were 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Wright & Ferguson High Street Chapel with burial in Parkway Memorial Cemetery at Ridgeland. He was a retired automobile salesman. He was born at Cascilla in Tallahatchie County to Dr. and Mrs. Roy D. Byars and graduated from Cascilla High School and attended Millsaps College and Mississippi State where he was a member of K.A. fraternity. He was inducted in the Army in 1941 and saw action in Company A. 29th Field Aartillary , in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, He received the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct, American Defense and Bronze Indian Arrowhead. In June of this year he visited Normandy and participated in the 50th anniversary of "D Day" and he was a member of the Battle of the Budge. He was a member of Broadmoor Baptist Church where he was a member of the Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Walter Scott Coffee Club and had been employed as a salesman for Blackwell Chevrolet for 29 years. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Savage Byars of Jackson; daughter, Georgia Hall of Sand Hill; son, Roy D. Byars of Belzoni; two brothers, Joe Randolph Byars of Marks and George Rice Byars of Memphis and four grandchildren.

Burial was in Charleston Cemetery. Mrs Graves, born Oct. 2, 1892, in Sallis, Miss., was the daughter of the late Dewey and Phoebie Cook Ellington. She attended Mississippi State College for Women and taught school prior to her marriage to William Henry Graves, a railroad agent, who prededed her in death in 1955. They lived in Merigold for 25 years before moving to Charleston in 1946. Mrs. Graves was a charter member of the Magnolia Garden Club. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Spotts of East Dennis, Mass., and Mrs. Phoege Mitchum of Erin, Tenn.; a son, Jack Graves of Asheville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Thomas Cole, James Graves, John Graves, Mitch Mitchum, Lanny Spotts and Michael Spotts.

A lifelong resident of Charleston, she married Charlie McWilliam Brunson in1918. Together they owned Brunson Barber and Beauty Shop in Charleston until they retired in 1961. After Mr. Brunson's death in 1970, she continued to live in her Charleston home until she became a resident of Grandview Health Care Center of Grenada in 1990. She was an active member of the Charleston First Baptist Church and the business & Professional Women's Club. She is preceded by a daughter, Hazel Street of Memphis; four brothers and four sisters of which she was the eldest. She is survived by two children, Charlsie Baucum of San Antonio, Texas adn Charles M. Brunson of Pine Bluff, Ark. and 6 grandchildren. She was a native of Tupelo, the daughter of Lena Payne Price and Cleveland H. Price. She moved to Charleston in 1950. She held numerous civic and church positions, including the Business and Professional Women's Club, which she held local, district and state positions. She was a State ?Federation President in 1966. She also, was involved with the Magnolia Garden Club, serving as president locally, as well as being a state officer. Mrs. Whitten belped organize and served as president of the Mississippi Tuberculosis Association. Mrs. Whitten, the widow of Harry Rivers Whitten, leaves a stepdaughter, Ann Cox and a sister, Nancy P. Enochs, both of Memphis, two grendchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was a career Air Force Veteran having retired after 20 years of service. He served all over the U.S., Europe, and the Far East including two tours of duty in Vietnam. After retiring from the Air Force, he established the American Drilling Company of Howard County. he ws involved in Civic Activities and local government, having served for 8 years on the Colorado School District (RE-3) Board of Education. He is survived by his wife, Barbara F. Dewberry of Howard, a daughter; Gay Dewberry of Tucson, Ariz.' two sons, Bradford (Bo) Dewberry of Howard and Christopher Dewberry of Denver, Col.; one sister, Gertrude Cook of Scobey and one brother, A. Charleston-MARY ETTA TRIPLETT HILL, 60, retired school teacher, died Saturday morning April 23, at her home after a long struggle with cancer. Rev. C. L. Shelton performed services Wednesday, April 27, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, where she was a member and served as class leader and stewardess, with burial in the Oliver Cemetery in her native hometown of Louisville. Century Funeral Home of Greenwood was in charge. Pallbearers were the stewards of St. Paul Church. Mrs Hill taught for 26 years at the Charleston Elementary School. She was a graduate of Coahoma Junior College and Mississippi Valley State University and did further study at Alcorn State and Delta State Universities. She was a member of the Mississippi Association of Educators and served for a number of years as youth director for the Business and Professional Women's Little Sisters Club. Mrs. Hill is survived by a daughter, Elma Jean Hill; a son Hirouth Hill; her mother, Odell Bozeman; and a grandson, all of Charleston.

An Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served for years as President of the Tallahatchie County Hospital Board and President of the Cowart Gin Corp. Board. He was a member of the Board of the Tallahatchie County Bank, former President of the East Tallahatchie School Board, past President of the Tallahatchie Country Club, and President of North Tillatoba Drainage District. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Heinline Sayle; one daughter, Sally Sayle Weathersby of Memphis; one son David Bardwell Sayle of Charleston; two step-daughter, Ann Heinline of San Francisce, Calif. and Patricia H. Sumner-MERIL LUTHER CANNON, 72, carpenter, died Sunday, July 3, at Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Greenwood. Services were Monday, July 4, at Pine Hill Presbyterian Church with Rev. Charlie Cornelius officiating. Burial was in Pine Hill Presbyterian Cemetery in Oakland. The husband of Helen Ruth Cannon, he is also survived by one son Tom J Walters of Kaleen, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Martha McCaslin of Springfield, Va. Mrs. Gayle Jennings of Taylorsville, Mrs Ellan Debrow of Theodore, Ala.; two sisters, Mrs. Geneva Bethea of Daphne, Ala. and Mrs. Beth holsonback of Spanish Fort, Ala.; 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Enid- SAM 'BIG BOY' BLACKBURN, 71, maintenance worker for Panola Mills in Batesville, died Saturday, July 2, of heart disease at Methodist Hospital in Memphis. Services were 1 p.m. Saturday, July 9, at Mt Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Enid, Where he was a member, with burial in Flemings Cemetery in Scobey, Cooley's Mortuary had charge. Blackburn, the husband of Dartha wren Blackburn, also leaves eight daughters, Christine Johnson of Batesville, Minnie Ray, Norma Faye Blackburn, Betty Blackburn, Odester Blackburn, Bobbie Shegog, Gloria Blackburn and Phylisteen Leonard, all of Enid; five sons, Sam Blackburn, Jr., Edward Ray Blackburn and Ben Blackburn Jr., all of Chicago, and Joel blackburn and Michael Blackburn, both of Enid; nine sisters, Annie M. Jonsoh and Gentra Lighting, both of Batesville, Emma Curtis of charleston, Martha Williams and Dora Johnson, both of Chicago, Willie M .Small, Flossie Cox and Male Robinson, all of Los Angeles, and Minnie Bell King of Detriot; seven brothers, Patrick Cox, Travis Blackburn, Billy Blackburn, and Tommie Lee Blackburn, all of Chicago, Cornelius Blackburn and Noble Hayes Blackburn, both of Batesville, and Jim Nelson of Rockford, Ill., 37 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Elaine, Ark.- JOHNNY 'JOHN' GILBERT WRIGHT, 69, died Friday, July 1, of natural causes at Helena Regional Medical Center, Helena Ark. He was a U.S.Navy veteran, retired farmer and carpenter, who had lived in Elaine since 1957. Services were held 4 p.m. Saturday, July 2, at Roller-Citizens Chapel. Officiating was Rev. Mike Fowler. Burial was held in Sunset Memorial Park in Barton Ark. He leaves his wife, Rachel Edgin Wright, two sons, John 'Johnny' Richard Wright and Terry Lynn Wright, both of Elaine, Ark. 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

I just have a written copy from the original Obit, and Ihave not been able to find either Rev E.D Rowe nor Mollie Rowe on the online Bethel Cemetery. And it doesn't say which Newspaper it was printed in. Mrs Rowe Dies at Home of Daughter In Marks Sat.A.M Dated 16 th March,1940 Mrs Mollie Rowe, born July 1855,died at the home of her daughter, Mrs Odie Bonner, in Marks, Saturday morning at 2:30 o'clock and was buried in the Bethel Cemetery in Tallahatchie Co Ms a few miles west of Enid. Mrs Rowe was a native of Panola County being born Mollie Goodnight on December 18,1883, she was united in Marriage to Rev.E.D.Rowe, a Baptist Minister of Tallahatchie Co . Rev. Rowe was a Confederate Veteran having served the full four years of the Civil War. He was a native of Alabama, returning to his native state, from Louisiana at the outbreak of the war to enlist.After the war he moved to Tallahatchie Co Miss where he married and became one of the most useful citizens of the County.He represented the County in the State Legislature and was a member of the Constitution Convention of 1890. Rev.Rowe prededed his wife in death on November 28, 1915 Surviving Mrs Rowe are two daughters and one son.Mrs Odie Bonner of Marks,Miss Peggy Rowe and D.C. (Clarence)Rowe of Denver Colorado. Mrs Rowe had made her home with her daughter in Marks for several years. She was a member of the Marks Baptist Church.She would have been 85 had she lived until July. Rev JC Wilson conducted the funeral at the Church 4:00 pm Saturday afternoon. Pallbearers were J.R Berryhill,L.C.Turner,J.P.Turner others were unreadable All the Pallbearers mentioned are Mollies StepChildren's Husbands.

Appendage to this Obit: Rev ED Rowe and Mollie Goodnight had another daughter.There oldest daughter Myrtle Rowe Atkins is not mentioned because she had married beneath her station to Edd Atkins.It has been said that Rev ED Rowe preached Myrtle's Funeral to her on her wedding day.And Rev.ED Rowe had disowned her from the family.Apparently the Family had deferred to his wish, and she isnt mentioned here.
