ROBBINS / ROBINS / WILEY
Robbie Robinson
Oct 25, 1998

I believe I have found my g-g-grandfather, George W. Robbins/Robins (age 17) living with the Richard and James Moffit families in the 1850 census of Sunflower Co. A William Robbins/Robins (age 10) was living nearby with the William Moffit family. I suspect they may be orphans of a female Moffit family member who married a Robbins.  I am having a hard time tracing where these Robbins came from and who George's parents are. George W. Robbins b. abt 1843 in MS married Elizabeth Ann Looney Wiley b. abt 1843 in Alabama shortly before her family moved to Noxubee , MS and they supposedly married at the Sunflower County Courthouse (McNutt?) on March 19, 1859. He was in the Civil War in Co. F, 30th MS from May 9, 1862 until as late as May 10, 1864. During his service he caught "Swamp Fever" (Malaria). He died during a malaria attack in July 1881 in Arcola, Washington, County, MS and was buried there. After his death his whole family moved to Oklahoma (then Choctaw Nation area of Indian Territory) and there are many descendants there and in East Texas. Elizabeth Ann Looney Wiley's parents were William W. Wiley and Sarah M.? who were born in Alabama about 1822 and 1825 and moved to Noxubee County, MS about 1845 although there seemed to be a lot of travel back and forth over the border since later children are listed as being born in both states. William W. Wiley and his family were listed as living i! n Sunflower County in the 1870 c ensus as family number 360 with George Robbins and his family as family no. 118.

MANNING / MOREHOUSE
Rick Manning
Harrah, OK, August 24, 1997

Looking for information about a lumber camp operated by P.J. Manning, on Darr Bayou. Many family members helped run the lumbering operation. I understand that it was very near the river (Sunflower River?) and that cut trees were floated downriver to sawmills. P.J. Manning was my Great-Grandfather. He moved from Texas to Sunflower County, but was originally from St. Clair County, Alabama. A son-in-law named Morehouse lived nearby, and also worked in the lumber camp. Family history mentioned something about barrell staves possibly being made there. To my knowledge, most all of this Manning family moved out about 1904-06. There are many other Mannings still living in, and around Drew, Mississippi. Anyone wishing to share information/old pictures about this family and their business should contact me at 18290 NE 27th St., Harrah, OK 73045 phone: (405) 454-3671.

I need to find this man to prove that he was my grandfather. We think we know who his father was, but without finding George, we can not be sure. any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. GRIFFIN / GAMBRELL / WOOLAM
Alvis Woolam
Jan 27 1997

Would appreciate any information about my great-grandparents, James Thomas Griffin (1850-1881) and Hattie Newell Smith Griffin (1853-1939) or of her second husband, Stewart Gambrell. Though I have a brief memory of my grandmother Gambrel, I thank the Lord my mother took the time to hand copy a newspaper clipping. It should remind us all to keep records for our descendants. The following was copied by Nancy Newel McGuire Woolam from a newspaper clipping in her parents family bible in the 1930's. The family home and bible were later destroyed by fire. "James T. Griffin, son of Thomas Griffin, formerly a citizen of Pontotoc Co., died in Sunflower Co., Mississippi on October 10, 1881 of Malarial Fever in the 31st year of his age. Mr. Griffin leaves a wife and four small children besides a large circle of relatives and friends, who deeply mourn his loss. It can truly be said of James Griffin that none knew him but to love and respect him for his many deeds of kindness and friendship to those by whom he was surrounded. Yet while we, his bereaved wife and little ones, his aged parents and his fond brothers and sisters, so deeply mourn his loss, he has not left us without a hope that our loss of him is his eternal gain.---A Friend"

I am looking for information on my family from Miss. My great-greatgrandfather, Willis K. Stickland, married Alicia Jane Morman somewhere near Grenada. My grandfather, James Jasper, was the first of their 10 children. He married Laura Ray before moving to Arkansas. My Maternal great grandfather, Nimrod Buzbee, married Lisa McCoy. I am not exactly sure of where this marriage took place. My grandmother, Harriet Anna (Hattie) was one of their 6 (I believe) children. Willis was in the Conf. Army and was wounded at the battle of Perryville, Ky. He was taken prisoner-of-war and taken to Cario, Ill. From there, he was part of a p-o-w exchange.

Searching for the family of ELISHA MONROE THOMPSON, son of David Sherrell and Mary Brower Thompson. Elisha was born 15 JUN 1848 or 1847 in Winston County, MS and died Nov 1903. He married three times, lived in the MS Delta area, perhaps after the death of his first wife. We believe she was was MARY ANN TATE, whom he married 13 NOV 1874 or 1884 in Yalobusha County. In the 1880 Federal Census of Yalobusha Co., Monroe's wife's name is Jennie. He had seven children, of which we have only five with names: Thomas M., Lillie, Dewey, Floyd or David and Fannie. The other two married a Gaither FORESHEE and a Vara ROSS. Fannie married A. J. "Bill" McCLURGE of Smyner, MS. They had three children: Alton, David & Myrtle who married a HIGGENBOTHAM and lived in Greenwood, MS. Any info on this family will be greatly appreciated.

I love the information you have available!  I would like to add that my great grandmother Luvenia Fuller Staples was buried and lived in Sunflower County.  She was married to my great grandfather James "Jim" Staples and my grandfather was born in Drew.  His name was Percy Daniel Staples, Sr.  July 3, 1916-January 30, 2000 (Died in St. Louis, MO).  My great grandfather William Watson Staples also resided in Sunflower County.  He was a slave to a Major William C. Staples in a place called Choctaw County.  His wife's name was Abbie Staples, I do not know her maiden name.  My great grandfather, paternal, Porter Diggs, Sr. was also a resident of Sunflower County.  So there are a few names I woul like to submit to your list.
Thank you for your time and attention.

I plan to spend next summer bolivar County "hunting down" old cemeteries and cataloging the names on the grave markers.
