Pike County, Mississippi History

About Pike County

Pike County, located in southwest Mississippi, was created from Marion County in 1815. Its boundaries remained unchanged until 1910 when Walthall County was formed from the eastern portion of the county. Magnolia is the county seat with the towns of McComb, Holmesville, Osyka, and Summit also located within its borders.1

Early settlers of Pike County migrated into the area primarily from the Carolinas and Georgia. With its location along the Louisiana border, many families also migrated back and forth between Pike County and the neighboring Louisiana parishes, particularly Washington Parish. Many descendants of these early Pike County settlers still reside in the county.

Due a Court House fire in 1882, no county records exisit prior to that year for Pike County.1
