Their courage and hard work tamed a wilderness and made way for the rise of it great nation. The story of their courage and achievements still thrills Americans today because they left an inheritance.

This is not the story of pioneer in the 1700 or I800's who struggled through the rugged Appalachian Mountains facing danger at each turn of the trail, but rather one whose life spans most of the Twentieth century. H us story is the story of a malt who has hazarded his life to explore frontiers of unreached people

I call not tell of all his achievements lit this short story, but it is my privilege and honor to introduce you to a pioneer, one who has tamed a wilderness and make way for thousands to find Clod real to their souls.

It was nit a hot August 17, 1909, that the home of Joseph and Viola Raper was illuminated by the birth of a precious blue-eyed boy, to whom they gave the name Samuel Jackson Raper who most of the time was called Jack. At the early age of three, Jack was left without the guidance of a lather when Joseph, a Methodist preacher cited

Because of financial adversity after the death of Joseph Viola. Jacks mother sold their little farm and paraphernalia in order to pay doctor hills and burial fur her husband. This deemed that they move from their then present location. 3 miles cast of Elvis Presley Drive, into Tupelo to secure work for family income. During the transition Jack lived in the home of his grandfather, John Bennett. Jack lived with his Grandparents until the age of ten, by this time Jack had become aquatinted with hard work on the farm.

In November 1928, When Jack was nineteen, he married a beautiful young lady by the name of Beatrice Dean. In the year 1931, their first child Mildred little was born bringing toy and gladness to the Riper Family. This happiness was soon interrupted when Mildred at the age of two fell into their fireplace and suffered severe burns. The following thirty days were horror for lack and Beatrice as they witnessed their beloved child die on January 7, 1933

During the time of Mildred's sickness and the bereavement that followed her death, Jack sought a companionship that he had never previously desired. a companionhip with God. This led to his conversion and on August 19, 1933 he repented of his sins, and was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and was gloriously filled with the Spirit of God.

The two years following his conversion were years in close communion with God by which he experienced marvelous encounters leading him into the ministry. His ministry began in 1935 when he preached the first sermon on the Court Square in Tupelo. MS.

The love for people and his willingness to help them with their varied needs soon gained Jack Raper respect from Lee and adjoining counties.

To reveal to you this respect ht, funeral conduction should be a record of convince. He preached funerals, hundreds untold, across Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama.

The name Jack was soon used with reverence as men and women watched a man possessed with i burden and zeal go forth declaring the Eternal Proclamation of God. It then became Brother Jack or Brother Riper, as he evangelized in tents and brush Harbors in Mississippi and Alabama.

Rev. Jack Raper was directly responsible for the establishment of four churches. In 1940 Bro. Raper began his first home missionary work tit a small community cast of Tupelo known as Richmond. The work began as his congregation assembled in his front yard. As a result a beautiful church was erected.

During his ministry at the Richmond Pentecostal Church. Rev. Raper was also called by God to pioneer two, new frontiers, Courtland and Red Bay, both in Alabama. There now exists established churches in both towns because of a pioneer.

In 1958 Bro. Raper felt in his heart by the leadership of the Spirit of God to move from Richmond to a community near Moulton, Alabama While he was there he received permission from the United Pentecostal Church, Alabama District to build another church which is a growing work today.

After pasturing in the State of Alabama, Bro. Raper came back to the church at Richmond, where he pastured a thriving, growing church in his latter years.

Most recently Bro. Raper was assisting his sun-tit-Law, Rev. John McAlister at the Verona United Pentecostal Church.

Bro. Raper, love for God, his love for the word of God, in passion for the ministry and his compassion for the poor people. should always he in inspiration to us .ill This is the type man that was referred to in Psalms chapter 1: his delight was in the law of the Lord, and in his law he meditated day and night, he was like a tree planted by the waters, that brought forth fruit in his season.

Stories about the marvelous leadership deep love and concern for people that this pioneer had will thrill many for years to come a real hero in pioneering the Gospel who may never be famous in the limelight of this world, but will always be famous in the word of God. It is without doubt that this man is receiving .t standing ovation from angels and is hearing the clapping of nail-scarred hands.

We arc not writing to boast of the good deeds of this pioneer but we arc boasting of a man who allowed God to direct him for over 45 years. This Pioneer may have moved from the scene but has felt us a great inheritance.

Funcial services for this great pioneer will be at 2:00 p.m. January 9, at First United Pentecostal Church.

Lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Rev. S. J. Raper Life Center lit care of First United Pentecostal Church. PO Box 399, Verona, MS 38879.
