TALEA'S TALE
A friend & I went to a large antique mall one afternoon in search of a pink alabaster jar that I had seen on my last visit. I noticed this huge box of paper goods setting on the floor under a table. The items were scattered in a haphazard manner so I sat down on the floor & started to look through it. I couldn't tear myself away from that box. My friend went on to other booths but I sat there on the floor all afternoon. :-) The lady couldn't figure out why I was so interested & too tell the truth neither could I. But I think the biggest part of it was that it was a box of several people's memories & it was kind of sad to see the treasures of their lives just thrown in a box & shoved aside. I think the lady thought I had found something that was worth a lot of money. She was suspicious when I wanted the whole box. She went through the box & pulled out several items that she assumed were of "value" & then asked I if I still wanted it. When I said yes, she asked what was in it that I wanted so much. My favorite thing was a hand drawn map in a scrapbook from a Pa. family's vacation. That seemed to satisfy her & she sold me the whole box for $20. I believe she told me that it was her nephew's stuff & that he had gotten the box out of his aunt's garage which they were going to tear down after she passed away. I think she lived in Virginia or W Virginia but I don't completely recall.

Since I brought the box home two years ago, I have been through it several times & I always find something new. The most recent time was night before last when my mom & I spent the whole evening "playing" with it. She kept saying why don't we look these people up on the Internet. I knew that it would be very time consuming to try to find a connection to all of the "lost souls" in the box so I thought I'd go to the gathering place where their families may be searching.

Many items belonged to a lady from the Greenwood, Ms. area which is located in LeFlore Co. So I paid their website a visit and that's where I met my new friend Debbie Gibbons. She is the co-county coordinator there. After exchanging E-Mails, we worked out a plan to get the related items uploaded so we could share them with others. We spent one Sunday afternoon scanning, E- Mailing, & sending instant messages back & fourth. After finally getting all the goodies sent her way, I had the realization that it was possible for this lady to still be living. I told Deb my thoughts on the matter. We had gathered enough information from the items in the box to do a search on the net. Deb looked in the Mississippi white pages & came up with one possibility. We were both very excited about our find & I decided to call the number. Sure enough, I spoke to the lady from the box for almost an hour! She was very enjoyable to talk to. Friendly and outgoing just like I imagined she would be judging from the treasures that she had saved for all those years. I asked her if she wanted her things returned and she said, "Heaven's no, I threw those things out long ago." She told me that when her parents passed away, she & her sister cleaned out the family home in Greenwood. Not having extra space in her new home, she decided to get rid of some of the less personal things and her daughters took several boxes away. After speaking with her I realized that her things didn't come from the aunt's garage in Va. so I asked her how she thought they got to the antique mall where I shop. Come to find out, her daughter only lives about 15 minutes from me! Being an antique lover herself, she must have taken some of the things in for exchange. I thanked her for the many hours of pleasure I had gotten from my "treasure" box. Being the kind lady that she is, she told me that she was happy I had enjoyed her old things.

I believe that the $20 I invested in that little box was very well spent. I have had many evenings of enjoyment, made new friends, had an adventurous search, and been able to share many valuable links to the past. It has truly been a box of treasures.
