I have recently become involved with geneology and I'm trying to locate any ASHMORE's or decendents that came from around Itta Bena. I don't have too much information. It's my mothers family. Her mother (maiden name ASHMORE) died when Mom was only 12. Her mothers name was Lily (possibly Lilly) Emma ASHMORE. HER parents died when she was very young. Had siblings but they were all parcelled out with the death of the parents. I'm trying to contact anyone with any information about them. I think that Lily Emma was born around 1910. Searching for descendants of Sion WHELESS of Greenwood MS. Sion had been married three times, 1st to Elizabeth STURDIVANT d. 1830, 2nd Lucy VAUGHN of Ark., & our Nancy ODOM bn 1812 in GA. Nancy had two boys: Jasper Potts bn 1846 and Jacob Nathanial bn 1848. We don't know when Nancy died, but Sion died March 5th 1858. We don't know where he is buried. This info would be greatly appreciated. We are told that orphan info would be of assistance but that info is in the attic of some courthouse in MS in boxes! Any help would be appreciated. Any newspapers from the time of Jacob's birth and Sion's death for the Greenwood area?

According to a family story, my grandmother, Lizzie Maude (JACKSON) ELLIS (1880-1966) had her appendix removed while pregnant with my father (J. B. ELLIS Jr.) in 1912. This is said to have been done by a Dr. HOLLIMAN (spelling?) on her kitchen table in Berclair, MS. Can anyone supply some information on this doctor, and/or verify the story? Also, Lizzie Maude's husband was J. B. ELLIS Sr. and he ran a general store in Berclair about 1910-1915. His twin brother W. W. ELLIS also operated a (competing?) store about the same time. Does anyone have more information on these stores, such as location, exact dates, advertisements, etc.?

K. STRICKLAND, married Alicia Jane MORMON somewhere near Grenada. My grandfather,
James JASPER, was the first of their 10 children. He married Laura RAY
before moving to Arkansas. My maternal great-grandfather, Nimrod BUZBEE,
married Lisa MCCOY. I am not exactly sure of where this marriage took place.
My grandmother, Harriet Anna (Hattie) was one of their 6 (I believe) children.
Willis was in the Conf. Army and was wounded at the battle of Perryville,
Ky. He was taken as a prisoner of war and taken to Cario, Ill. From there,
he was part of a POW exchange.

A brief note in a non-reference book
states: "Velma BEADLES married ______DICK Greenwood MS" she was born in
NC/KY? possibly 1810 -speculation by same source. If this is true then
I should be able to find her in LeFlore co. Maybe the 1840 census will
have them but I feel sure the 1850 will. I have not been able to locate
a marriage certificate either. A younger family member was living in Yalobusha
Co, MS by 1848.

Also need information on Thomas PEEPLES(PEOPLES, PEEBLES), b.1797 S.C. md 28 Aug 1813 in Northampton Co., NC. Died between 1850-1860 in MS. Married Catherine GORDAN, b. 1801 in SC, died after 1870 in MS. Thomas PEEPLES' father was Joel PEEBLES, Sr. Grandfather was Ruben PEEBLES.
Also need information on Martha Jane ELLIOTT who married William W. PEEPLES 1855 MS. She is buried outside of Morgan City, MS.

My great-great grandma was Sarah Jane (JORDAN) SLAVEN. She was born and raised in Mississippi, specifically in Carroll County. I have heard family stories that say her two daughters, Texanna and Henrietta SLAVEN were "kin" to Greenwood LeFlore. I am trying to prove this story. Texanna and Henrietta both married RICO brothers. Later in life they moved to Georgia (Ailey) and this is where Sarah SLAVEN died and was buried.
Sarah J. JORDAN b. Sept 7, 1849 in
what we believe to be Coila, MS m. Charles SLAVEN sometime after April
of 1864 in the same area. I would very much like to find out the names
of Sarah's parents and older siblings.
