The Lafayette County Historical and Genealogical Society was founded in 1967 as the Skipwith Historical and Genealogical Society. The Society is housed in the Lafayette County and Oxford Public Library in Oxford, Mississippi. The mailing address is P. O. Box 1382, Oxford, MS 38655.

    The Society is a non-profit organization, whose purpose is (1) to seek, collect, preserve and disseminate facts and information with reference to historical, genealogical and biographical matters, (2) to inculcate and promote interest in historical, genealogical and biographical research, (3) to provide instruction and assistance in the use of scientific principle and efficient procedures in researching, recording and publishing historical and related facts, and (4) to champion high ethical standards in practice.

    The Society has a regular meeting, with a speaker, every other month.  The meetings are usually held at the public library at 2:30 p. m. on the third Sunday of the month.
