Monticello Destroyed by Tornado 1882 |

A tornado destroyed all but three homes in Monticello 23 Apr 1882. Many were injured, some seriously. Before the tornado, the town had about 150 people. Homes and businesses were blown away, and afterward, fires destroyed much of what remained.
Those who were injured or killed were:
Dr Cannon, wife and child, killed
Rev S W Dale, killed
H Weathersby, Chancery Clerk, killed
Beadle, severely injured
Max Cohen, badly burned, expected to die
Myers and wife, injured
C K Dale, slightly injured
William Butler, ex-Sheriff, badly burned, wife expected to die
Allen Sharp, killed
Jake Myer, collarbone broken
Charley Cohen, broken leg
Mr Cohen's store, after being blown down, was struck by lightening, which consumed any remnants. Samuel Hickman's residence, four miles southwest of town was entirely demolished, but no one was hurt.
