The editor and his family returned last Friday from a trip to Collins, Mt Olive and Wilksburg, in which business and pleasure were combined. En route, we stopped over at Silver Creek on Saturday, the 7th, to take in a Woodmen picnic and speaking. After stopping at the comfortable home of Mr D C Griffith for a few minutes, we went over to the Baptist church and heard a fine sermon by the pastor, J P Williams, after which it was announced that the Woodmen dinner would be served in the grove close by the church. It was an elegant spread, and there was enough dinner left over to feed another crowd of almost similiar proportion. If this is the way Silver Creek people are going to treat the Association, we shouldn't be suprised if a resolution isn't passed to meet there all the time. The speaker for the occasion - Mr Simrall - was not forthcoming, and the exercises scheduled to take place at the school building in the afternoon were abandoned, much to the disappointment of those present. Our journey was continued the same afternoon and the night was pleasantly spent with a great-aunt of our wife, the widow of the late Robt Laird, who lives near Blountville, having with her at present two sons, and two daughters. Passing next morning through that fine farming country contiguous to Whitesand creek, we reached Collins at 12:30, remaining with our sister, Mrs W L Garrison, until Monday evening, when we went up to Mt Olive and spent the night with Mr J B Rawls Jr, and his hospitable family in their elegant new home. Returning to Collins on Tuesday evening, we again stayed with our sister, and the next morning left for Mr John Allen's in Marion county, where a day and a half were spent before returning home.

Joseph Dale was the owner and publisher of the Lawrence County Press for some 35 years. He married Maude C Allen 11 May 1897 in Marion County.They had five children, all raised in Monticello. Years later, after the death of Maude, he remarried to Amanda Laird McNair. At the time of this trip the family had 2 boys , ages about 3 and 1 plus. This trip was by wagon or buggy.
