The very early settlers who came to Jefferson County, Mississippi before 1830 deserve our admiration as pioneers. Some of the information we are trying to include are name (include wife & children who also migrated); date arrived; Claim #, Land Grant, or deed ie. bought from/sold to; location in Jefferson County where they settled; or any info on their migration trip to the area including what they brought with them.

Bailey Eliphalet Chaney was born in "Carolina." He migrated to Mississippi in 1781 settling on Cole's Creek, now in Jefferson County, MS. Bailey married Elizabeth Ratcliff in 1798. They had 10 children. Bailey died 25 Dec 1825 in East Feliciana Parish, LA. Elizabeth died 4 Jul 1855 and is buried in Bluff Creek Cemetery probably in East Feliciana Parish, LA.
John Hawkins shows up on the 1792census. He was living in the Natchez District, Mississippi Territory in Villa Gayoso. There was a WILLIAM HAWKINS in the Natchez District during this time also. I found on land records where Richard and John Hawkins bought land on March 29, 1804, Volume No. 31 Pages 171 & 172. My great-grandfather was Richard Hawkins who was born in Jefferson County in 1798. I have found him on tax records in 1815, census records 1820, marriage records where he married Sylvana McDonald on 9 Dec 1819. They had a daughter Martha who later moved to Hot Springs, AR. John Hawkins also shows up there. Later the two show up in Little Rock, AR. John and William had to be early settlers in the Natchez District, but I can't find any marriage records on John or birth records on Richard and his sisters.
Jonathan Scarborough is first found in the Jefferson County, MS records in the 1810 Mississippi Territory census. He is listed in the 1816 Mississippi State census with 6 children. In the 1820 Federal Mississippi census he is listed as being over 45 years of age and with 9 children. Jonathan is also listed in the 1820 census as was Lemon Scarborough. By 1830 he and his family had moved to Yazoo County. His wife's name was Maurnin. He may have come from North Carolina.
