Obituaries

Mr. Joseph Jackson Anderson, died 20 August 1947, aged 78 years, who made his home with the families of his sons at Ingleside since the death of his wife January 20, 1946, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. O. A. Bryant in Jackson Sunday afternoon, and his remains were buried from the home of his son Hugh Anderson in Port Gibson at four o’clock Monday afternoon with interment in Wintergreen Cemetery.

Deceased was a member of the Ingleside Baptist Church, and the pastor, Rev. A. E. Hamilton, officiated.

He is survived by five sons, Hugh, Oscar, Roy, Troy, and Grady, all of Port Gibson; five daughters, Mrs. J. C. Brown, Port Gibson and Mrs. T. S. Marino, Mrs. O. A. Bryant, Mrs. A. W. Roan, and Mrs. Fred Thomas of Jackson; twenty-five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

The pallbearers were: Edward Roan, Clifton Brown, O. A. Bryant, Fred Thomas, T. S. Marino, and E. L. Davis.

Joseph Jackson “Joe” Anderson, son of Hugh Elisha Anderson, Sr., andOphelia Cornelia Green, born 15 December 1868, died 20 August 1947. Married 19 December 1888 Quillie E. Kirkley.

Funeral services for Mrs. J. J. Anderson, 75, were held Monday from the home of her son, R. H. Anderson in Port Gibson.

Mrs. Anderson died Sunday morning, January 20, 1946 at eleven o’clock in Jackson at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Martha Bryant. Mrs. Anderson had been in ill health for two months and was undergoing treatment in Jackson. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, J. J. Anderson, Port Gibson, she is survived by five sons, R. H., O. H., Roy, Troy, and Grady Anderson, all of Port Gibson; five daughters, Mrs. Lela Brown, Port Gibson, Mrs. Martha Bryant, Mrs. Emmaline Marino, Mrs. Irene Thomas, and Mrs. Olivette Roan, all of Jackson. Twenty-five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive.

Rev. A. J. Hughes, Mendenhall, Rev. Sammy Crawford, Jackson, and Sgt. A. E. Hamilton officiated at the funeral. Interment was in Wintergreen Cemetery. Guion Funeral Home was in charge of arrangement.

Pallbearers were: Vernon Brown, Edgar Davis, William Pierson, A. C. Woods, Joe Willis and R. L. Gillon.

Quillie E. Kirkley, daughter of Richard R. Kirkley and Emaline Frances Sullivan, born 18 April 1872, died 20 January 1946.

Richard Hugh Anderson, 61 year old resident of Port Gibson, died at a Vicksburg Hospital late Saturday afternoon, April 3, 1954 after a long illness.

A prominent resident of Claiborne County, he was a retired timber man and cattleman. He was an active member of the Port Gibson Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. R. H. Anderson of Port Gibson; three daughters, Mrs. Albert Tanner, Mrs. Clyde Woods, and Mrs. D. E. McCaa, Jr., all of Port Gibson; four brothers, Oscar Anderson of Port Gibson, Roy Anderson of Bolton, Troy Anderson of Port Gibson,, andGrady Anderson of Port Gibson, five sisters, Mrs. J. C. Brown of Port Gibson, Mrs. Tony Marino, Mrs. Edward Roan, Mrs. Otha Bryant and Mrs. Fred Thomas, all of Jackson; and eight grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 5 p.m., from the Anderson residence of Port Gibson with the Rev. A. A. Ward, pastor of the Port Gibson Baptist Church officiating assisted by the Rev. A. E. Hamilton.

Pallbearers were the following grandsons of the deceased: Jack Woods, Walter Stampley, Jr., Mack Woods, Clyde Woods, Jr., Gerald Stampley, and H. J. Anderson.

Honorary pallbearers were: T. C. Norwood, J. M. Snider, M. M. McFatter, H. B. Hudson, J. S. Middleton, D. E. McCaa, Dr. D. M. Segrest, Dr. W. N. Jenkins, Dr. Gus Street, Dr. L. J. Clark, W. G. Craft, W. C. Stampley, Edward Willis, and R. D. Gage, Jr.

Richard Hugh Anderson, son of Joseph Jackson Anderson and Quillie E. Kirkley, born 23 October 1891, died 3 April 1954. Married 13 September 1914 Robbie Kathryn Norwood.

SERVICES HELD FOR MRS. ANDERSON WHO DIED DECEMBER 31, 1971

Mrs. Robbie K. Norwood Anderson, 79, died suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. C. Wood, last Friday night, December 31, 1971.

A lifelong resident of Claiborne County, Mrs. Anderson was the widow of Richard Hugh Anderson, who died April 3, 1954. He was a prominent landowner and timber man.

She leaves three daughters, Mrs. A. C. Wood and Mrs. Albert Tanner of Port Gibson, and Mrs. K. K. Raner of Fort Hood, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. C. E. Willis of Port Gibson and Mrs. H. C. Fuller of Hazlehurst; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Guion Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. L. B. Atchison officiating, assisted by the Rev. A. E. Hamilton.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren, Ricky McCaa, Walter Stampley, Gerald Stampley, Jack Wood, Mack Wood, Clyde Wood, Jr., Neal Wood, and Edward Hudson.

Guion Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Wintergreen Cemetery.

Robbie Kathryn Norwood, daughter of Robert Jefferson Norwood and Permelia Rebecca Kirkley, born 3 September 1892, died 31 December 1971.

MRS. KATHERINE RANER DIES SEPTEMBER 14, 1989

Graveside services for Mrs. Katherine Anderson Raner were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 16, in Wintergreen Cemetery, with Rev. Clayton Bath of the Port Gibson Baptist Church officiating. Guion-Glenwood Funeral Home of Port Gibson was in charge.

Serving as pallbearers were nephews, Jack Wood, Mack Wood, Clyde Wood, Jr., Neil Wood, Tim Hudson, and Gerald Stampley.

Mrs. Raner, 63, died Thursday, September 14, at the Vicksburg Medical Center. She underwent surgery in late August, then suffered a heart attack.

The deceased was born and reared in Claiborne County, and lived most of her life here. She was a member of the Port Gibson Baptist Church.

She leaves on daughter, Mrs. Kathy Dorathy, and one son, Ricky McCaa, both of Port Gibson; two sisters, Mrs. Q. B. Tanner andMrs. Eva Wood, both of Port Gibson, and six grandchildren.

Robbie Kathryne Anderson, daughter of Richard Hugh Anderson and Robbie Kathryn Norwood, born 24 August 1926, died 14 September 1989. Married 26 August 1944 (1) David Ernest “Buddy” McCaa, Jr. Robbie Kathryne Anderson McCaa married (2) Kenneth K. “Rip” Raner.

D.E. (BUDDY) MCCAA DIES MAY 29, 1992 AT HOME

Funeral services for David E. (Buddy) McCaa were held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 1, at Guion-Glenwood Funeral Chapel.

Mr. McCaa, 68, died of heart failure early Friday afternoon, May 29, at his home. He had been a patient at the Vicksburg Medical Center for several days last week, and been released only last Thursday.

The deceased was born and reared in the Willows community of Claiborne County. He as a farmer and a cattleman and also a horseman. He like to go on Western-style trail rides.

Mr. McCaa was a veteran of the U. S. Navy in World War II. He served as a deputy sheriff under Sheriff Dan S. McCay for a number of years.

He was the owner of “Buddy’s Last Chance Restaurant” on the Grand Gulf Road and operated it himself for several years until his health began to fail.

Mr. McCaa leaves his wife, Mrs. Vernita Bailey McCaa of Port Gibson, two children, a daughter, Mrs. Kathy Dorathy, and a son, Ricky McCaa, both of Port Gibson; two step-children, a son, Ramsey Bailey of Hazlehurst, and a daughter, Robin Bailey, also of Port Gibson; two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Headley and Mrs. Jessie Mae Ellis, both of Port Gibson; seven grandchildren and other relatives.

David E. McCaa, son of David E. McCaa and Myrtle Moore, born 14 May 1924, died 29 May 1992.

KENNETH RANER DIES SATURDAY

Kenneth W. “Rip” Raner died late Saturday afternoon, February 7, 1985 at the Mercy Regional Medical Center in Vicksburg after a brief illness. He was 49.

Born in Jefferson County, Mr. Raner was reared in Port Gibson. He retired from the U. S. Army after 20 years service, and for the past six years had made his home in Port Gibson. He was a member of the Port Gibson Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katherine Anderson Raner of Port Gibson, one stepdaughter, Mrs. Kathy Dorathy of Port Gibson; one son, Kenneth K. Raner, Jr. of Carlisle; one stepson, Ricky McCaa of Port Gibson; two sisters, Mrs. Marion Penland of Austell, Georgia, Mrs. Johnnie Cisson of Marietta, Georgia; four brothers, Bill Raner of Lilburn, Georgia, Charles R. Raner of Alpharetta, Georgia, Dudley Raner and George Raner, both of Port Gibson; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services were at 11 1.m. today at the Guion-Glenwood Funeral Chapel in Port Gibson with the Rev. Clayton Bath officiating. Burial was in the Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson.

Pallbearers were Gerald Stampley, A. C. Wood, Jr., Mac Wood, Shelton Raner, Harvey Raney, Chris Raner, Gene Cisson.

EVA ANDERSON WOOD

Eva Anderson Wood died Tuesday, April 20, 1993, in an automobile accident on U. S. 61 near Yokena. She was 71.

Mrs. Wood was a lifelong resident of Claiborne County. She was an inspector for American Paper Tube Company for the past 39 years. She was a member of the Port Gibson Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and the Port Gibson Baptist Church.

She is survived by three sons, Jack Wood, and Mac Wood, both of Port Gibson, and Clyde Wood, Jr. of Vicksburg; one sister, Q. B. Tanner of Port Gibson; four grandchildren, Andrea Lee Wood and Jennifer Wood, both of Vicksburg, and Neil Wood and Mac Merritt Wood, both of Port Gibson, and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson with the Rev. Clayton Bath officiating. Burial will be at Wintergreen Cemetery in Port Gibson. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Stampley, Neil Wood, Timmy Hudson, Ricky McCaa, Eric Dorathy and Edward Hudson, Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be J. C. Brown, Vernon Brown, Malcolm Montgomery and Leroy Varnado.

Eva Anderson, daughter of Richard Hugh Anderson and Robbie Kathryn Norwood, born 16 March 1922, died 20 April 1993.

ARTHUR C. WOOD, 71, DIES SEPTEMBER 23, 1984

Services for Arthur C. Wood were held at 3 p.m. Monday, September 24, at Guion-Glenwood Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Clayton Bath officiating. Burial was in Wintergreen Cemetery, with Neil Wood, Rollo Hammett, Jr., Stacy Shannon, Nick Williams, Vernon Brown, J. C. Brown, Gerald Stampley, and Billy Mathews serving as pallbearers.

Mr. Wood, 71 died early Sunday morning, September 23, at his residence near Port Gibson. He was a lifelong resident of Claiborne County and had worked for many years for Claiborne Hardware Company in its tractor and car maintenance department. He was a member of the Port Gibson Baptist Church.

The deceased leaves his wife, Mrs. Eva Anderson Wood of Port Gibson; three sons, David Jack Wood and Mac Merritt Wood, both of Port Gibson, and A. C. (Tinsey) Wood, Jr. of Vicksburg; two sisters, Mrs. Lorraine Hamilton of Port Gibson and Mrs. Margie Pullen of Greenville, Mississippi; and one brother, Earl Wood of Port Gibson; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Arthur Clyde Wood, son of Cleve Wood and Jessie Ragland, born 31 December 1912, died 23 September 1984. Arthur C. Wood married July 7, 1936 Eva Anderson.

A. Clyde Wood, Jr. died Monday, July 29, 1996, at the Claiborne County Hospital in Port Gibson. He was 55.

Mr. Wood was born and reared in Port Gibson and had lived in Vicksburg for the past 35 years. He was a past master Mason of the Port Gibson Masonic Lodge No. 0003. He retired as an employee of the Waterways Experiment Station, Printing Branch, in July 1995. He was a member of the board of directors for the LeTourneau Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member and Elder of Yokena Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, A. C. Wood, Sr., and Eva Anderson Wood.

He is survived by his wife, Martha “Sissy” S. Wood of Vicksburg; two daughters, Andrea Wood Lum and Jennifer Wood Wooley, both of Vicksburg; two brothers, Mac Wood and Jack Wood, both of Port Gibson; his sons-in-laws, Bruce Lum and Jason Wooley, both of Vicksburg; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home in Port Gibson with the Rev. David Daniels officiating. Burial will be at Wintergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 tonight at Glenwood Funeral Home in Vicksburg and Thursday at the funeral home in Port Gibson beginning at 9 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Steve Stephens, John Stephens, Lewis Kelly, Bobby Parker, Neil Wood, Jacob Donellan, Bruce Lum and Jason Wooley.

Quillie B. Tanner, 81, died June 2, 1998 at Parkview Medical Center in Vicksburg.

Services will be Friday, June 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Glenwood Chapel in Port Gibson with Rev. Chuck Terrell officiating.

Burial will follow in Wintergreen Cemetery with Glenwood Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

A life long resident of Claiborne County, she was a member of Port Gibson Chapter Order Eastern Star #337. She was a member of the Port Gibson Baptist Church. She worked for the American Paper Tube Company for 35 years, retiring in 1987.

Survivors include two sons, Walter J. Stampley, Jr. of Merritt Island, Fla., and Gerald W. Stampley of Vicksburg; one daughterJanice S. Carter of Port Gibson; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.

Quillie Rebecca (Q.B.) Anderson, daughter of Richard Hugh Anderson and Robbie Kathryn Norwood, born 4 May 1917, died 2 June 1998. Married 4 August 1935 (1) Walter James Stampley, son of Walter Camp Stampley and Allah Eloise Walton. Married (2) 8 December 1946Albert William Tanner, son of Albert Wade Tanner and Maude Mary Thompson.

Services for Albert W. Tanner were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 13, 1981 at Guion-Glenwood Funeral Chapel in Port Gibson with Rev. A. E. Hamilton officiating.

Serving as pallbearers were Jack Wood, Mack Wood, Clyde Wood, Jr., Edward Hudson, Sr., Edward Hudson, Jr., George Peacock, Jr., and Timothy Hudson. Masonic Lodge members served as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Tanner, 73, died early Sunday morning, July 12, at his home near Port Gibson, where he had lived all his life.

He was retired from Marathon LeTourneau Co., in Vicksburg, and was a member of the Port Gibson United Methodist Church.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Albert W. Tanner; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Janice S. Hudson of Port Gibson; two stepsons, Walter J. Stampley of Merritt Island, Fla., and Gerald W. Stampley of Vicksburg; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Albert William Tanner, son of Albert Tanner and Mary Maude Thompson, born 3 April 1908, died July 12, 1981.

MRS. W. C. DAVISDIED WEDNESDAY; FUNERAL FRIDAY

Mrs. Mary Maude Davis died Wednesday afternoon, December 3, 1958 at her residence at the age of 72 years.

She was born at Allen, Mississippi, but had spent most of her life in Port Gibson. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held from Guion Chapel Friday at 10 a.m., with Rev. R. Stewart Smith, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating, assisted by Rev. Nat Mayhall, pastor of the Baptist Church. Burial will be in Wintergreen Cemetery.

She leaves three sons, R. C. Davis, Port Gibson; Albert Tanner, Port Gibson, and Bernard Tanner of New Orleans; one sister, Mrs. Bannie Furr of California, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Active pallbearers will be: P. M. Watkins, Waddy Abraham, H. N. Gage, J. H. Jordan, Roy Starnes, and Norman Ellis.

Honorary pallbearers: J. Mack Jones, S. H. Bagnell, Henry Eaton, R. D. Gage, Jr., Michael Ellis, Dr. D. M. Segrest, O. E. Adams, and E. M. Jordan.

BROTHER OF MRS. DAVIS DIES IN HAZLEHURST

IKE THOMPSON

Hazlehurst - Services for Ike Thompson, 76, lifelong Hazlehurst resident and a retired merchant who died Sunday at his home following a heart attack, were conducted Monday at the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church near here with burial in the church cemetery.

Thompson was associated in business here for several years with Garland Pitts.

Survivors include two sisters; Mrs. W. C. Davis of Port Gibson and Mrs. C. H. Milligan of Oakland, California, and several nieces and nephews.

R. C. DAVIS DIES IN TALLULAH, LOUISIANA, SEPTEMBER 7

R. C. Davis, 61, a former resident of Port Gibson, died in a Tallulah, Louisiana nursing home of an apparent heart attack September 7, 1979. He had been in Tallulah for about a year.

Services for Mr. Davis were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, September 8, at Guion Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Wilbur Irwin, pastor of the Forest Hills Baptist Church of Jackson, officiating. Burial was in Wintergreen Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Gerald Stampley, Mack Wood, Jack Wood, Ricky McCaa, Edward Hudson, and David Dorathy.

The deceased was a former accountant who had been in ill health for a number of years. He was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Army.

Mr. Davis leaves a half-brother, Albert Tanner of Port Gibson, and a cousin, Mrs. Gladys Lassing of Jackson.

Robert Colon Davis, son of William Davis and Mary Maude Thompson, born February 5, 1918, died September 7, 1979.

Mr. J. J. Norwood died Thursday, September 5^th, 1901, at home near Ingleside, after an illness of several weeks.

The deceased was admired by all who knew him. He had long lived in this county and had attained to a ripe old age. He leaves a large family to mourn his loss.

John Jefferson Norwood, born 17 September 1837, died 5 September 1901. Married 28 December 1857 Ann Beatrice Price, daughter ofStancel W. Price and Lydia Gibson.

Children: Allah Emily, Robert Jefferson, Martha Elizabeth, Alena Ann, John Stancel, Mary Alzader, Mark Lefitte, Luke Thomas, Ella Catherine, and Henry Clay.

JOHN NORWOOD, SR., HAS FATAL ATTACK

John D. Norwood, Sr., 74, died suddenly Sunday afternoon of an apparent heart attack.

He was a native of Claiborne County and had lived in Vicksburg since childhood. He was a retired storekeeper of the U. S. Corps of Engineers. After retirement, he worked for the City of Vicksburg as captain and harbor master of the Sprague for 10 years.

He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and member of the William G. Paxton Masonic Lodge No. 559.

He leaves four daughters, Mrs. Ansell H. Jones of Memphis; Mrs. William Martin of Yazoo City; Mrs. R. L. Mullen of Vicksburg; Mrs. David Ouzts of Vicksburg; six sons, Luke T. Norwood of Bovina; John Norwood, Jr. of Gonzales, Louisiana; Frank Norwood of Vicksburg; Douglas Patrick of Brookhaven; Wayne Patrick of Vicksburg; Marshall Patrick of Pascagoula; 23 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; a sister, Mrs. Katherine McCaa of Vicksburg; a brother, Tom Norwood, Sr. of Port Gibson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Baptist Church, with Rev. David Kendall officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The body will be at Fisher Funeral Home until the hour of the service. Visitations will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. J. T. Walton of Ingleside was killed by an automobile driven by Mr. M. R. Hammond at Baton Rouge, La., last night. No particulars of the accident have been received, the simple announcement of her instant death after being struck reaching her husband.

The remains will reach Ingleside this afternoon and taken to the home of Mr. W. C. Stampley to await the arrival of relatives before interment in the Shiloh Cemetery.

Mrs. Walton was well advanced in years. Beside her husband, she leaves several children and grandchildren and many other relatives.

Mrs. Alena Ann Walton, daughter of John Jefferson Norwood and Ann Beatrice Price, born 7 September 1865, died 10 September 1924. Married 20 July 1882 James Thomas Walton. On Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m., while visiting her sister, Mrs. William Smith, in Baton Rouge, LA., Alena was struck and killed by a car as she walked along the 3600 block of Plank Road. James and Lena Walton are buried in the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery.

Children: Laura Ann, John Richard, James William, George Pennington, Mary Lena, Allah Eloise, Lula Elizabeth, Charles Mark, Jesse Redus, and Enoch Ardon.

Mrs. Rebecca Kirkley Norwood, wife of Mr. R. J. Norwood, died suddenly at her home near Big Black river on Friday night, September 23^rd, 1904.

The deceased was high esteemed by those who knew her. She leaves her husband, six children, one only two weeks old, an aged father and two sisters and two brothers.

Rebecca Permelia Kirkley, daughter of Richard R. Kirkley and Emmaline Francis Sullivan, born 25 January1868, died 23 September 1904.

Mr. Robert J. Norwood died at 5:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon, November 8^th, 1941 at his home near Ingleside, at the age of 80 years.

The remains were buried at three o’clock Sunday afternoon in the Norwood cemetery nearby, following service in the Shiloh Baptist Church of which he was a member. The Rev. L. Reed Polk officiated.

Mr. Norwood was a native of Claiborne County and spent his entire life here. He was a member of a large family, most of whom preceded him in death.

Besides his wife, Manthis Mae, the deceased leaves three daughters, Mrs. Clara E. Willis, and Mrs. Robbie Anderson of Ingleside, and Mrs. Johnnie Lee Fuller of Hazlehurst. Also one son R. J. Norwood, Jr. of Ingleside.

The pallbearers were: R. H. Anderson, O. H. Anderson, Howard Fuller, W. C. Stampley, Earl Norwood, Jesse Walton, Thomas C. Norwood, Dan Norwood, and A. J. Whittington.

Robert Jefferson (Bob) Norwood, son of John Jefferson Norwood and Ann Beatrice Price, born 18 May 1861, died 8 November 1941 in Claiborne County, Mississippi. Married 1 February 1888 (1) Rebecca Permelia Kirkley. Robert Jefferson Norwood married 15 September 1915 (2) Manthis Mae (Buckaloo) Norwood.

Mrs. Manthis Mae Norwood, 68 years of age, passed away at her home, Route 3, Hazlehurst at about 2:00 o’clock Thursday afternoon, January 26, 1961.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Howard Fuller, Hazlehurst, two step-daughters, Mrs. R. H. Anderson, and Mrs. Clara Willis both of Port Gibson; two sisters, Mrs. Odell Bridges and Mrs. A. J. Whittington, Sr., both of Hazlehurst; two brothers, Fred Norwood of Fitchburg, Mass. And Earl Norwood of Terry, Miss. And a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 27^th at First Baptist Church of Hazlehurst and interment was made in Pine Bluff Cemetery, Dentville, Miss., with Rev. Rowe C. Holcomb, pastor of Hazlehurst Baptist Church officiating.

Manthis Mae (Buckaloo) Norwood, daughter of Augustus Norwood and Holly Emmaline Bordurant Bufkin, born 22 August 1892, died 26 January 1961.

Funeral services for Mrs. Johnnie Lee Fuller, age 62, of Hazlehurst, were held Dec. 6, 1979, at Pine Bluff Baptist Church with the Rev. James Berch and the Rev. Bill Horne officiating.

She died Dec. 5, was a native of Claiborne County, and a member of West Side Baptist Church

Survivors are her husband, Howard S. Fuller of Hazlehurst; one son, Paul Earl Fuller of Idabel, Okla.; one daughter, Mrs. Joy Mae Knight of Hazlehurst; one half sister, Mrs. Clara Willis of Port Gibson, and four grandsons.

Pallbearers were Lamar Harbour, Lamar Douglas, Herbert Deaton, Jim Hudson, Mac Wood, and Allen Emerson.

Interment was in Pine Bluff Cemetery with Stringer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mary Johnnie Lee Norwood, daughter of Robert Jefferson Norwood and Manthis Mae Norwood, born 5 October 1917, died 5 December 1979. Married 20 August 1933 Howard Sylvester Fuller.

MRS. CLARA WILLIS, 96 DIES IN VAIDEN

Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Ethel Norwood Willis were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 1, 1986 at the Shiloh Baptist Church, with Rev. Tim Patrick of Ona, Mississippi, officiating. Burial was in the Willis family cemetery in the Shiloh community, with Guion-Glenwood Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Grandsons served as pallbeares.

Mrs. Willis, 96, died Tuesday, September 30, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marie Williams, in Vaiden, Mississippi, in Carroll County.

Mrs. Willis was born July 21, 1890, in Claiborne County, a daughter of the late Robert Jefferson and Rebecca Kirkley Norwood. She spent her entire life in Claiborne County, and worked for some time as dietician at Port Gibson High School. She was the widow of Evan Willis. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

Besides her daughter, Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Willis leaves five other daughters, Mrs. Mary Kate Anderson, Mrs. Emma Lee Emerson, Mrs. Bessie Mae Anderson, and Mrs. Clara Floyd, all of Port Gibson; and Mrs. Rebecca Anderson of Vicksburg; three sons, Robert Willis of Mobile. Alabama, and Joe Willis and Edward Willis, both of Port Gibson; 48 grandchildren, 137 great-grandchildren, and 60 great-great grandchildren.

Clara Ethel Norwood Willis, daughter of Robert Jefferson Norwood and Rebecca Permelia Kirkley Norwood, born 21 July 1890, died 30 September 1986.

CHARLES SPURGEON HARRIS

Charles S. Harris, 46 died September 19, 1942 in a Vicksburg hospital from injuries received the day before when he was crushed by a falling tree. A resident of Ingleside where he was engaged in farming and logging, Mr. Harris leaves his wife, the former Miss Emma Stampley; a daughter, Vivian Donnielee; three brothers, Grady, Wesley, and Aubrey Harris, a sister, Mrs. T. A. Smith; and his father, C. A. Harris of Hazlehurst.

EMMA S. ROGILLIO

Natchez - Emma Stampley Rogillio died Thursday, August 10, 1995 at Natchez Regional Medical Center. She was 96.

Mrs. Rogillio was born and reared in Claiborne County, where she lived until moving to Natchez in 1985. She was a member of Port Gibson Chapter No. 337, Order of Eastern Star and Port Gibson Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Donnie Harris Rhoades of Natchez; three grandchildren, Bill Rhoades of Natchez; Vance Rhoades of Vidalia, Georgia; and Marsha Overton of Dallas, Texas; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Glenwood Funeral in Port Gibson with the Rev. Clayton Bath officiating. Burial will follow at Wintergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Overton, Richard Parker, Richard Parker, Jr., Ural Bliss, Jr., Tommy Norwood and Wallace Rodriguez.

Honorary pallbearers will be Andy Hamilton, Waddy Abraham, Dr. D. M. Segrest and Rudy Case.

Emma Beatrice Stampley, daughter of William Moore Stampley and Lula Louise Ross, born October 31, 1898, died August 10, 1995. Married (1) Charles Spurgeon Harris. Emma Stampley Harris married February 2, 1950 (2) Eugene V. “Gene” Rogillio.

DONNILEE H. RHOADES

Port Gibson - Services for Donnilee H. Rhoades, 66, of Natchez, who died Monday, February 25, 2002, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 1 p.m. today at Glenwood Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be in the Wintergreen Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home of Port Gibson. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until service time today at the funeral home.

She was a native of Port Gibson and graduated from Port Gibson High School, Mercy Nursing School in Vicksburg and Natchez Business College. She retired as an auditor for Sears after 20 years of service. She was a longtime member of Parkway Baptist Church in Natchez.

Mrs. Rhoades was preceded in death by her mother, Emma Rogillio. Survivors include her husband, Charles W. Rhoades of Natchez; two sons, William H. Rhoades of Natchez and Charles Vance Rhoades of Vidalia, Georgia; one daughter Marsha Overton of Waxahachie, Texas; and two grandchildren,William Paul and Holly Rhoades both of Vidalia, Georgia.

Pallbearers will be Ural Bliss, Wallace Rodrigues, Richard Parker, Jr., Anthony Townsend, Clyde Rodrigues and Homer Rodrigues. Honorary pallbarers will be Ray Brown and Richard Parker, Sr.

Vivian Donnielee Harris Rhoades, daughter of Charles Spurgeon Harris and Emma Beatrice Stampley, born 12 August 1935, died 25 February 2002. Vivian Donnielee Harris married 21 March 1954 Charles William Rhoades

Mr. William Stampley, a native of Claiborne County, died at his home near Ingleside last Friday. The deceased had been in failing health for several months, and his death was not unexpected. He was about 46 years of age.

William Moore Stampley, son of William Camp Stampley and Sarah Slater, born 1854, died 23 November 1900. Married 28 March 1881 Lula Louise Ross.

After an illness of about five weeks, Mrs. Lula Louise Stampley, aged 79 years, died at the home of her son, Supervisor W. C. Stampley at eight o’clock Sunday morning, December 10, 1939 and the remains were laid to rest Monday in the family cemetery near Ingleside. The funeral was conducted byRev. J. E. Gray of Port Gibson, assisted by Rev. Mr. Hughes of Ingleside.

Mrs. Stampley was born at Carpenter, Miss., Feb. 6, 1860, and resided there until her marriage to William Moore Stampley in 1880. She had long been a member of the Methodist Church.

The deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Emma Stampley Harris, and two sons, W. C. Stampley and J. W. Stampley, besides ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The pallbearers were W. L. Harmon, O. H. Anderson, Allie Harris, B. B. Callender, H. D. Bufkin, E. W. McCarty and J. C. Brown.

Lula Louise Ross, daughter of George W. Ross and Martha A. Owen, born 6 February 1860, died 10 December 1939.

Funeral services were held last Friday afternoon, June 8, 1945, at five o’clock for Walter J. Stampley, 29, who was fatally injured Thursday by a log falling from his truck as he was preparing to unload logs at the plant of the Port Gibson Veneer & Box Company.

He was the only son of President W. C. Stampley, of the Board of Supervisors, and Mrs. Stampley.

His last rites were held from his parent’s home near Ingleside, with Rev. J. B. Holyfield, pastor of the Port Gibson Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment was in Wintergreen Cemetery, with Masonic honors. A squad of the local State Guard Company, of which he was a member, fired a salute over the grave.

A young man of excellent character, Mr. Stampley had many friends throughout the county, who were shocked and grieved over his tragic death.

It is stated that as he loosened one chain on his truck, a log rolled off. He attempted to run, but the log pinned him to the ground, crushing his body.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Stampley leaves his wife, formerly Miss Q. B. Anderson; three children, Walter, Jr., Janice and Gerald Stampley; also three sisters, Mrs. Eloise Stampley Wailes, Loretta and Nell Stampley, and other relatives.

Pallbearers were: Guy Patterson, G. W. Wilson, J. H. Ammons, J. S. Cade, Everette Montgomery, and R. E. Boyd.

Walter James Stampley, son of Walter Camp Stampley and Allah Eloise Walton, born 21 April 1916, died 7 June 1945. Married 4 August 1935Quillie Rebecca (Q.B.) Anderson, daughter of Richard Hugh Anderson and Robbie Kathryn Norwood.

MRS. W. STAMPLEY DIES; LAST RITES SCHEDULED TODAY

Port Gibson, Nov. 21 - Mrs. Allah Eloise Stampley, prominent Claiborne County resident, died today while en-route to a Vicksburg hospital. She was 58.

A member of the Methodist Church, Mrs. Stampley had lived in Claiborne County her entire life.

She is survived by her husband, W. C. Stampley, three daughters, Mrs. Sims Ramsey, Hazlehurst, Miss.; Mrs. Loretta DeFoe, Rich, Miss.; Nellie Stampley, Port Gibson; two sisters, Mrs. Lena Fortner, Natchez, Miss.; Mrs. Lula Povlitzki, Baton Rouge, La.; three brothers, Charley, and J. R. Walton, Baton Rouge; Arden Walton, Chicago, Ill.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock with Reverend J. S. Conner, officiating, assisted by Reverend J. B. Smith and Reverend A. E. Hamilton.

Interment will be in Wintergreen Cemetery with the Guion Funeral Home in charge.

Active pallbearers will be as follows: David Dodell, C. L. Nelson, E. K. White, Jack Parker, Hicks Parker, and Henry Porter.

Allah Eloise Walton Stampley, daughter of James Thomas Walton and Alena Ann Norwood, born 18 January 1894, died 21 November 1952.

WALTER STAMPLEYDIES, PROMINENT IN CLAIBORNE

Walter Camp Stampley, prominent Claiborne County farmer, died at his home last night, July 7, 1955. He was 71.

Mr. Stampley was a member of the Methodist Church and a former president of the Claiborne County Board of Supervisors. He was also a member of Washington Masonic Lodge, No. 3.

He leaves three daughters, Mrs. Sims Ramsey of Hazlehurst, Mrs. Billy DeFoe of Port Gibson, and Mrs. Richard Parker of Port Gibson; a sister, Mrs. E. V. Rogillio of Port Gibson, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 3:00 o clock at the Port Gibson Methodist Church, with the Rev. Stuart Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by theRev. A. E. Hamilton. Burial will follow in the Wintergreen Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Guion Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Walter Camp Stampley, son of William Moore Stampley and Lula Louise Ross, born 5 August 1883, died 7 July 1955. Married July 18, 1915 Allah Eloise Walton.

JOHN STAMPLEY DIED AT HIS HOME NEAR INGLESIDE

Mr. John Stampley, age 49 years, died at his home near Ingleside Friday night, August 3, 1945 and the remains were buried in Wintergreen Cemetery from the Guion Funeral Home at four o’clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. J. B. Holyfield officiating, and the Masons conducting the service at the cemetery.

Mr. Stampley was a native of Claiborne County and had spent his entire life here. He was a member of the Methodist Church and of Washington Masonic Lodge.

The deceased had been engaged in the timber business with his brother, W. C. Stampley for several years.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Rosie Lee Barnes Stampley, he leaves one daughter, Mrs. Lillian S. Witt of Vicksburg, and one son Elmer Stampley of Mobile, Alabama. He also leaves one brother, Walter C. Stampley of Ingleside, President of the Board of Supervisors, and one sister, Mrs. Emma Harris of Port Gibson.

John Wesley Stampley, son of William Moore Stampley and Lula Louise Ross, born 1 September 1895, died 3 August 1945. John Wesley married (1) Hattie Louise Ragland and married 7 August 1941 (2) Rosie Lee Barnes.

Funeral services for James Elmer Stampley, Sr., 74, of Lake Providence were held Monday, August 26^th, 1991, at 2 p.m. in the Providence Worship Center with the host pastor, the Rev. Don Boyett, and the Rev. Roger Ely, pastor of the First Assembly of God Church, officiating.

Interment followed in Providence Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home.

The overflow crowd of friends joining the family at the Church bespoke of the special niche held in this community by the unassuming and uninhibited James (Wheelhorse) Stampley as he was known far and wide. His death of August 23^rd came as a shock.

Born in Port Gibson, Mississippi, August 9, 1917, to Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley Stampley, he was preceded by them in death, also by his daughter, Evelyn. His mother was the former Hattie Louise Ragland.

For more than 50 years, Stampley had lived in Lake Providence where for the past 37 years he owned and operated the Stampley and Sons Machine Works. During World War II he worked in the shipyards of Mobile, Alabama. He also was known for his deep and abiding commitment to the Lord’s service and in recent months had been conducting a street ministry. He was for the past 30 years a member of the Lake Providence First Assembly of God. Truly “Wheelhorse” was loved by all who knew him.

Pallbearers were Wilbur Wiggers, S. L. Bernard, Johnny Dukes, Virge Hawkins, Michael Powell, W. P. Tomlinson, and Grady W. Brown.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Merle Josephine Stampley of Lake Providence; two sons, James E. Stampley, Jr. of Oak Grove and Ronnie O. Stampley of Tallulah; one daughter, Sheila Moseley of Oak Grove; one sister, Lillian Witt of Tacoma Park, Maryland and nine grandchildren.

James Elmer “Wheelhorse” Stampley, son of John Wesley Stampley and Hattie Louise Ragland, born 9 August 1917, died 23 August 1991.

MERLE JOSEPHINE STAMPLEY

Merle Josephine Stampley died Tuesday, October 29, 2002, at her home. She was 80.

Mrs. Stampley was preceded in death by her husband, James Elmer “Wheelhorse” Stampley, Sr.; two daughters, Evelyn Merleen Breeden and Sheila Arleen Moseley; her parents, Jessie Owen and Rosa Anna Mae Slaughter; three brothers, Jess Slaughter, Jr., Donnie Slaughter, andRay Slaughter; and two sisters, Jean Cox and Dale Boudreaux.

Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Stampley of Red Oak, Texas, and Ronnie Owen Stampley Sr. of Tallulah; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Providence Worship Center in Lake Providence with the Rev. Don Boyett officiating. Burial will follow at Providence memorial Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home.

Merle Josephine Slaughter Stampley, daughter of Jesse Owen and Rosa Anna Mae Slaughter, born 1922, died 29 October 2002 at Lake Providence, Louisiana.

FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FORJOE B. HUDSON

Joseph Barksdale Hudson, Sr. died at his residence in McBride, Mississippi at seven a.m. Wednesday, June 11, 1969. He was born in Jefferson County, August 19, 1902, the son of the late Henry H. Hudson and Letitia M. Hudson. He was married in 1923 to Fannie F. Smith. To this union were born five sons and four daughters who all survive him.

Prayer services were held on Friday morning at ten a.m. at the chapel of Laird Funeral Home in Natchez with the Rev. Gordon Lyles and the Rev. Ralph Webberofficiating.

Funeral services were held at three p.m. Friday at Lebanon Methodist Church in McBride with the Rev. C. O. Stegall, Rev. Kermit Grammar and Rev. Wayne Spencer officiating. Interment was in the McBride Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Joe B. Hudson; five sons, J. B. Hudson, Jr., Boyd Hudson and John Paul Hudson of Denver, Colorado, Edward and Cornie Hudson of Natchez; four daughters, Mrs. Margie Loftin of Natchez, Mrs. Annette Nesler of Columbia, Mississippi, Mrs. Sylvia Bowman of Middlesboro, Kentucky, Mrs. Frances Barrett of Alexandria, Louisiana; a brother, Cornie Hudson of Sumrall, Mississippi; a sister, Mrs. Lottie Smith of McBride; twenty-six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Active pallbearers were J. L. Nesler, Roy Lutz, Hobert Riley, Howard Haley, Rayford Varnado and Robert Griffith.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR FANNIE S. HUDSON

Funeral services for Fannie S. Hudson, 89, of McBride, who died Tuesday, March 19, 1996, at Natchez Community Hospital will be held 2 p.m. Friday, at Laird Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ralph Webber and theRev. Norris Curry officiating.

Burial will be in the McBride Cemetery in Jefferson County, under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

She was born January 24, 1907 in Jonesville, Louisiana, the daughter of Boyd and Pearl Paul Smith. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph B. Hudson, Sr.; one son, Edward Hudson and grandson, Joe Wayne Hudson.

Survivors include four daughters, Frances Barrett of Monroe, Louisiana,Margie Stephens of Coushatta, Louisiana, Sylvia Bowman of Spokane, Washington; and Annette Giordana of New Mexico; four sons, J. B. Hudson, Jr. of Little Rock, Arkansas, Boyd Hudson of McBride, Cornie Hudson of Natchez, and John Hudson of Denver, Colorado; 29 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

EDWARD M. HUDSON DIES IN JACKSON JUNE 13

Funeral services for Edward Madison Hudson were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 16, 1994 at McBride Chapel, with burial in the McBride Cemetery in Jefferson County.

Mr. Hudson, 55, died of heart failure Monday, June 13, 1994, at the Jackson Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The deceased was born July 1, 1938 in the McBride community of Jefferson County, a son of the late Mr. Joseph B. Hudson.

He was a printer who worked for The Reveille from 1955 to 1958. Later he owned and operated a printing business in Natchez. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy.

Mr. Hudson leaves two sons, Edward M. Hudson, Jr. of Monroe, Louisiana, andTimothy Hudson of Port Gibson; one daughter, Joyce Peacock of Monroe, Louisiana; four brothers, Boyd Hudson of McBride, Cornie Hudson of Natchez, J. B. Hudson of Romance, Arkansas, and John Hudson of Denver, Colorado; four sisters, Frances Barrett of Monroe, Louisiana, Margie Stephens of Coushatta, Louisiana, Sylvia Bowman of Spokane, Washington, and Annette Hudson of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and seven grandchildren.
