Muster Roll of the 17th Mississippi Infantry |
While no company in the 17th Miss. was formed in Tippah County, all were organized in north Mississippi counties nearby or boarding on the county. There were men from Tippah County in the regiment. Most of the information here came from the National Park Service, Soldiers and Sailors system. If the Confederacy had as many men as are listed on its rosters it would have had more men than the Union and probably would have won the war! I have found cases where a single man is listed six times. He may be listed by initials or name or any combination and by every spelling found in the records. Apparently there was also a problem reading some of the old handwriting so you find the same man with different initials. I have removed as many of the duplicates as I dare. Many duplications are still on this list. While I doubt this regiment every had the full compliment of 1,000 men there are over 2,200 names on this list. Of course men were getting killed and others were joining but I doubt anywhere near that total served in the 17th. I have added to the total by including men who served in more than one company to all those companies. Also I have added men not on the list when I have found them buried someplace with the their unit on their graves since there are no records for some men known to have served. Some were added from the roll of honor in the O.R. These you can tell by looking at the rank in and out columns. In most cases I don't know their rank but assume them to be privates. Spelling is a serious problem. I attempted to make sure all men were listed and deleted spellings I thought were incorrect. Use this list as a guide only.
My thanks to Bruch Reith who is researching the 17th Miss. and provided information on 300+ burials. He wants to make contact with relatives of these soldiers for information and photos. You can contact him by clicking on this name Bruce Reith
