* A note about Bethel Church in Chickasaw County
submitted by: [email protected]
Bethel Baptist Church, about 8 miles south of Houston, just east of Highway #15, was founded by James MARTIN b. January 21, 1798 NC, son of William MARTIN and Hannah IRVIN. The Bethel Church Cemetery is where William and Hannah MARTIN, and Druscilla MARTIN are buried.

The names of the eleven charter members of this church were: William MARTIN and Hanna, Morris CARROLL and Nancy, Simeon ESKRIDGE and Susannah, David WHITE and Mary, R. E. MARTIN, William WEST and Hannah. A deed for two acres of land was recorded and signed by Simeon ESKRIDGE and his wife, Susannah, for the church grounds and cemetery.

The first pastor, the Rev. James MARTIN, died in 1885 and was the first person to be buried in Bethel Cemetery. In 1889, a new church building was constructed under the direction, among others, of J. M. GORDON."
