1. What is a mailing list?
Answer: A mailing list is a collection of
e-mail messages that pertain to specific subjects. MSCALHOU is dedicated
to Calhoun County, MS
2. What page do I go to so that I can see what it's like?
Answer: There is not a specific web page set
up for the MSCALHOU Mailing List sponsored by Rootsweb.com. The messages
are received and posted by your normal e-mail browser.
3. Are messages kept in an archive?
Answer: Yes, and
a search engine is used to help retrieve them. Search through the
Archives on the Calhoun
List at https://mailinglists.rootsweb.com/listindexes/legacy/usa/MS/calhoun.html
4. Do I have to be on the mailing list to search the archives?
Answer: No, the purpose of the mailing list
is to let you read and post messages as they are submitted. It saves
you from checking out other web sites to see what someone has added.
The administrator may post announcements that could benefit interested
parties, or someone may send in a query that matches your research.
Anyone can check through the archives for past messages.
5. Are there other mailing lists besides MSCALHOU?
Answer: Thousands, but why would you want any other?
Go to the Rootsweb Home Page and scroll
down to mailing lists and then click away.
6. What about other places in Mississippi?
Answer: Try this MS
General Interest site on the Rootsweb.com page. Don't forget to go
to the main page at rootsweb.com to find all the available resources, not
just these shortcut sites!
7. I'm just about convinced. Is it hard to join the
MSCALHOU List? Is it like, real technical?
Answer: You just have to type
in a one word command to join. Just one! It goes in the body
of your regular e-mail message. If your browser requires a subject,
(some do and some don't) then put the same word in the subject. The
command is 'subscribe', but don't enclose it with quotation marks.
8. Where do I send the command 'subscribe'?
Answer: The address to join is: [email protected]
or mail to: [email protected]
9. What's the difference in those two addresses?
Answer: The difference is one letter
in the address. There are two "modes" of message delivery.
In "list mode" each message comes to your computer in an individual message format. For "list mode" use the letter "L".
In "digest mode" several messages are bundled together, (if the list is active and has a lot of interaction) and the bundle is sent as a single unit. For "digest mode" use the letter "D".
Choose only one address. You do not have to be on "both" modes to get all of the messages.
10. So, I just click on "one" of the address above and then
type the command 'subscribe' (without the quote marks) in the body of the
message and that's all!
Answer: That's all, pretty simple right?
I'm expecting to hear from you soon!
11. What if I don't want to continue with the list?
Answer: Would you believe that it is as simple
as how you joined? Just type 'unsubscribe' in the body of the message
and send to the same address listed above. You guessed it; no quote marks!
12. What if I have a problem getting set up?
Answer: If you have a problem with
getting setup, just let me know.
