The Caldwell and Bounds Families

Calhoun and Yalobusha Counties, Mississippi


 

The following transcription is from a Bible originally owned by Alexander Caldwell and his wife Laura Louise Seale.  The Caldwell’s settled in the area of Dividing Ridge in what is now Yalobusha County about 1871.  They originated in Greene County, Alabama, where Alexander and Laura Louise were born in the 1830’s and married January 13, 1857.  The Seale and Caldwell families migrated together to Mississippi.  The Caldwell’s eventually settled in the area west of Banner, where they are buried in the Old Banner Cemetery.  The Seale’s settled in the area of Mt. Nebo Church, where many of them are buried.

The Caldwell family Bible was passed on to the family of Albert Rufus Caldwell and Carrie Mae Bounds, who lived in Big Creek.  The Bible itself is currently missing, having been misplaced in a succession of unfortunate deaths in the next family to inherit it.  An active search is now in progress.  This transcription is taken from photostatic copies made in the 1980’s.

The transcription below has been reproduced as accurately as possible with all the mistakes, repetitions, omissions, etc., just as they appear in the original.  It is interesting that the surname Caldwell was sometimes definitely spelled Coldwell.  The ‘o’ is clearly different from the ‘a’ in the word ‘was’.

Several different writers entered the original data in the Bible, and the writing is generally quite legible.  Comments in square brackets have been added to clarify, explain, or expand the information.  Only information for which there is definite proof has been annotated in this manner.  Each name is expanded only on its first appearance, and the middle initial ‘B’ is ‘Bounds’ unless otherwise noted.

[From other records it is known that his name was Marshal Sidney, but he went by the nickname of “Judge” and was usually called “Uncle Judge”  He died in Forrest City, Arkansas, of the flu on October 17, 1918, during the great influenza pandemic.]
