Notes on Spring Hill from Andrew Brown's book, History of Tippah County, the
First Hundred Years: Spring Hill, was located 6 miles north of Salem.
Among the first settlers were the McKenzie and the Hardaways. The
village was about three miles south of Davis Mills on the Wolf River,
which was near the present village of Michigan City. After the
Central Railroad was completed shortly before fighting began (The Civil
War), most of Spring Hill's business moved to Davis Mills.
Beloved Teacher Miss Howard With Mississippi Schools for 35 years
The many former pupils of Miss Jennie D. Howard who have kept in
touch with her thru the years,
will sorrow to learn that she died at 7:30 a.m. today at her home, 533
Leath. Miss Howard, who would have been 92 in December, had been
ill since April. Until then, she had been active and continued
her correspondence, writing the beautifully composed letters that had
endured her to so many.
Miss Howard taught school in Mississippi for more than 35 years before
her retirement, teaching at Michigan City, Spring Hill, and
Hushpuckena. Relatives say they believe she placed a Bible in the
hands of every pupil she ever had and it was amazing how many of them
continued to depend upon her for advice and encouragement thru the
years. On her birthday and Christmas, Easter and other holidays
she received greetings and congratulations from former students who had
scattered all over the World.
She was a member of First Methodist Church. She was born at
LaGrange, Tenn.
She was the aunt of Edwin B. Winsett and Mrs. H. C. Bledsoe of
Memphis.
Services at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow at National Funeral Home, Rev. Cecil
Baker officiating. Burial at LaGrange Cemetery about 11:30.
Miss Jennie Howard Mississippi Teacher 35 Years Dies in Memphis
Miss Jennie Howard of 533 Leath, Mississippi School Teacher for 35
years, died at 7:30 yesterday morning at her home. She was 91.
Services will be at 9:30 this morning at National Funeral Home with Dr.
Cecil A. Baker officiating. Burial will be at LaGrange Cemetery
at LaGrange, Tenn.
Miss Howard was born in LaGrange and moved to Memphis in 1882.
During school terms she taught at Spring Hill, Michigan City and
Hushpuckena, Miss., returning to Memphis in the summer.
She was a member of the First Methodist Church.
Miss Howard retired in 1930, and lived with her niece, Mrs Lucy W.
Bledsoe, and her nephew, Edwin B. Whitsitt, at the Leath address. Mr.
Whitsett is employed in the composing room at The Commercial Appeal.
