Slavery

Slaves were maintaned on the Schakes of La Charette farm prior to the Civil War. Black, Indian and mulatto slaves were bought and sold as chattel property in Missouri. By 1859 the Ahmanns, Hillebrands, Ritters, Rocklages and Schakes were all residing in Charette Township, Warren County, Missouri. There where 144,000 slaves on inventory in Missouri although none of these German settlers owned slaves. However, on June 5, 1353 the Ahmann farm in Lienen, Prussia was sold to the Iburg Monastery for 30 Mark in Osnabrueck currency; the sale included the people living there. Ancestors to our Ahmanns were almost certainly among them. The sale bill shown above was obtained from the 1934 book, Zachary Macaulay by Charles Booth, Longmans, Green and Co., New York.
