Turkey Raising, c1954

Part of 1,500 turkeys raised in confinement for the Holiday markets. A similar 1954 photo was used by the St Louis Post -Dispatch as a portion of a feature article. The article indicates that the Schakes started raising turkeys 16 years previously, and further explained that they would have started a year earlier except for the 1938 arrival of son Lowell. Initially Martin and Flora maintained a breeding flock and hatched 200 eggs in a kerosene burning incubator in the home. Flora is quoted in the article as saying, "We also stayed up a good many nights with that first hatch."
