HURLEY—John Ronald “Bill” Logan, 79, Hurley, died at 11:58
a.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2001 in Cox Medical Center South. He was born
August 20, 1922 near Hurley, Missouri to William Alfred and Frances Emma
(Gibbs) Logan.
Mr. Logan served in the Army during World War II from
November 14, 1942 to October 20, 1945. He served Hdq. Co., 1st Bn., 13th
Infantry, 8th Division. The 13th Infantry was known as the Golden Arrow
Doughboys. The 13th Infantry began their European Campaign on July 4, 1944
on Utah Beach. The regiment took over 100,000 prisoners. The 8th Division
suffered nearly 14,000 men killed or wounded. The campaign ended on May
8, 1945 meeting the Russians at the Elbe River in Germany after many battles,
which included the fiercest fighting and heaviest casualties in the European
Campaign. He was awarded the Infantry Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat
Badge, Good Conduct Medal, EAMA Service Medal with four Bronze Service
Stars. He was a member of VFW Post 3404.
He married Joan Andrus, daughter of Jess and Cora Mae
(Blades) Andrus on March 30, 1950. They lived and raised their children
on their farm near Hurley.
He was a retired farmer and a member of the Hurley United
Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; three children and their
spouses: Dr. Michael J. and Jeannie Logan of Newport, Arkansas, Mary Ann
and Joe Lakins of Clever, Missouri, and Kora Sue and David Lindsey of Hurley;
six grandchildren: Wesley Brian Logan, Stephanie Gayle Logan, Rebecca Dawn
Logan, Jennifer Ann Lakins Watson, Angela LaRee Lindsey, and Jason Matthew
Lindsey; one great-grandchild; Jeremy Michael Seeley; brothers and sisters:
Gordon William Logan of Rockford, Illinois, Jesse Carl Logan of Hurley,
and Virginia Glossip of Brookline.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, September
22, 2001 in Meadors Chapel in Clever with Rev. Joyce Rush and Rev. Larry
Winfree officiating. Burial, with military honors by the Veteran’s Memorial
Team, will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
The Clever chapel well be open Friday morning with visitation
from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Veteran’s Memorial
Team.
