Charles Wesley Johnston, 69, merchant in this city for the past several
years, died in the Springfield Baptist Hospital Friday of last week, following
an operation earlier in the week, which he underwent hoping to secure relief
from bladder disease, from which he had suffered for several months.
Mr. Johnston (son of James and Effie Garland-Johnston) was
a native of Bloomington, ILL, but had been a resident of this state for
many years. He came to Crane from Jasper, in Jasper County, several
years ago and established a restaurant business here, in partnership with
his daughter Miss Effie Johnston. Later they went out of that business
and established a variety store, which they have operated for several years.
Mr. Johnston and his daughter were associated together in all their business
enterprises.
He was married to Miss Cynthia Osborn in 1883, (19 Jan, 1883 in Chariton County, MO) and she passed away in 1928. They were the parents of 12 children, nine of whom are living and who are: Arthur F., of Decatur, ILL; Walter W. of Larned, Kan.; Mrs. Cora Hipsher of Lebo Kan.; Mrs. Pearl Bilderback of Hollister, Okla.; James P., of Sapulpa, Okla; Mrs. Elsie Plummer, of Topeka, Kan.; Earl E.; Effie Johnston, and Mrs. Ruth Link, all of this city.
Mr. Johnston and his daughter held rather extensive property interests here, and were among the substantial business firms of the city.
Mr. Johnston became a church member in Lawrence, Kan., in 1911, but
had never held membership with local churches. Funeral services were
conducted at the home, Saturday afternoon, by Rev. J.D. McCaughtry and
burial made in the Masonic cemetery. (From The Crane Chronicle
