O. SCOTT DIES IN OKLAHOMA
Was Barber in Galena for More Than 40 Years-- Helped Organize Sunday
Schools
(Submitted by Ken and Pam Coones)
Orlando Scott, 80 years and 11 months old, died
in Oklahoma City on Monday night of this week, according to information
received Tuesday morning by his brother, J. D. Scott here.
The deceased was born in Platte county, Missouri,
in 1856 and came to Lawrence county with his parents in 1867. About
1874 he moved to Stone county and settled on Crane creek. It was
here that he was married to Miss M.M. Burk about 1878 and to this union
four boys and two girls were born, all of whom survive him: G.M.
Scott of Texas; Robert T. Scott of California; G.C. Scott of
Texas; Walter Scott of Detroit; Mrs. Edna Walters of Aurora, and
Mrs. Sallie Southard of Oklahoma City.
About 1883 Mr. Scott came to Galena and at
first operated a telephone business. For more than 4 years he barbered
here and made many close friends.
He became a member of the Christian church
about 1879, and throughout the remainder of his life he lived a devout
Christian life. He was instrumental in organizing many Sunday schools
in Stone county in the early days. He and Mrs. Sallie Porter worked
untiringly in Sunday school work in the county and at one time Stone county
was the banner county in the state for number of organized Sunday schools.
Mrs. Scott died about three years ago. J.D. Scott of Galena is the
only surviving brother.
Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon
at Aurora and burial will be in the cemetery there beside his wife.
It is likely that the Masonic lodge will have charge of the burial, since
he had been a member of that organization for many, many years.
