CONTAGIOUS DISEASE APPEARS IN GALENA
Smallpox and Spinal Meningitis Reported--  One Death and Others Are Ill.
(Submitted by Ken and Pam Coones)

Every precaution should be taken in Galena to prevent the spread of reported contagious diseases here, says Dr. H.L. Kerr of Crane, president of the State Board of Health.  More than a week ago the C.W. Barnes family were reported by Dr. L.S. Shumate of Reeds Springs to be suffering from smallpox.  The family was not quarantined until last night when Dr. H.L. Kerr of Crane was asked to come to Galena to investigate the case.  A rigid quarantine was placed on the family by Dr. Kerr and the sheriff ordered to arrest any member of the family breaking the quarantine.
Six year old son of Mr. and Mrs Chas. Hanniff, who had been ill for several days, was reported by Dr. Shumate to have spinal meningitis and when Dr. Kerr came to Galena last night he placed a quarantine on the family.  The child died this morning about 6 o'clock.
