HADSALL, Helen Mae Turner
St. Clair County Courier,
29 June 2007
Helen Mae Hadsall was born in Britt, Iowa on March 7, 1914 to George
and Maggie Turner and passed from this life at her home in Osceola on
June 21, 2007.
At a very young age Helen and her family moved to Ventura Heights,
Iowa, where she grew to young adulthood on the shores of Clear Lake.
Her mother died when she was an adolescent, so she received her care
and nurturing from her father and six older brothers. She attended
school at the Ventura Iowa Public School and in the summer helped her
father with his boat rental and guide service. She learned to love and
appreciate God's world as she spent many hours on the lake fishing,
exploring the woodlands looking for berries, nuts, flowers, and
hunting.
Helen was married in 1932 to Glen Hadsall and lived in the Mason City,
Iowa area where eight children were born. Two children were born after
moving to Missouri in 1946. They lived in the Osceola area until 1971
nd then moved to North Carolina where their son, Larry, was serving in
the Marines.
They spent happy years discovering a new area and way of life. She
especially appreciated and enjoyed the warm and friendly North
Carolinians, finding a church home, fishing in the Atlantic waters,
gardening and visiting local landmarks and historical sites. In 1980
they moved to Rockville and then to Osceola in 1998.
Helen accepted the Lord in 1983 and was baptized at the First Baptist
Church in Havelock, NC. After moving to Rockville she attended the
Osceola Community Church and then The Believers Church. She faithfully
served and enjoyed her church families.
Helen belonged to the Rockville Women's Bible Group and after moving
to Osceola continued to meet with them. She enjoyed being the hostess
for the annual Christmas gathering in her home.
Helen had a full and rich life, sometimes difficult staying at home
caring for ten children. She loved to cook and tried new recipes from
her many cookbooks and the Capper's Weekly. Her love of hunting helped
to provide meals of wild game. While living in Iowa pheasant was
common fare.
Before moving to Osceola she always had a big garden and many flowers
and trees. She enjoyed reading, and her collection of books, quilting
and traveling. She especially enjoyed the family gatherings and was
always ready for a game of cards.
She is survived by six daughters; Gloria Wears and her husband Harold
of Lowry City, Gladys Settle of Stockton, Charlotte Becker and her
husband Elmer of Mayview, Colleen Vaughn, Donna Brock, Frances Keyes
and her husband Greg, all of Osceola. Four sons; Larry and his wife
Eva of Schell City, Gordon and his wife Dolores of Kansas City, Gary,
and Omer and his wife Judie of Osceola, twenty-seven grand children,
forty-six great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren, one
sister-in-law, Margaret Hadsall Mateer of Los Angeles, numerous nieces
and nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 71 years, her
parents and six brothers; Elmer, George, Elwood, James, Frank and
Charlie.
Services were held Monday, June 25 at Sheldon-Goodrich Chapel.
Officiated by Greg Mangum and Jerry Osborne.

HAMBLIN, Eddie S.
Osceola Sun,
3 October 1878
Hamblin – Another tender bud has been plucked by the silent messenger
of Death – Eddie S., son of John R. and Martha J. Hamblin.
At five o’clock, Friday morning, September 27th, 1878, when only two
years and ten months old, he was transplanted by angels’ hands to the
paradise of God, to bloom amid the fadeless flowers of that celestial
clime. -
A cherub boy, too pure for earth, -
Was lying, deeply racked with pain, -
Though scarce two seasons since his birth, -
A fever pressure seized his frame. -
A hope, a fear, a sigh, a moan, -
Filled every anxious breast. -
But all his sufferings were unknown; -
His age too tender for complaint. -
The sun then shed its morning ray -
With all the brightness of the day, -
When Eddie breathed his life away, -
And sank to his eternal rest.

HARRIS, Rebecca C.
Osceola Sun,
20 September 1878
Of a Congestive Chill, on the 29th day of August, 1878, at her
mother’s residence in Jackson Township, St. Clair County, Mo., Rebecca
C., daughter of G.H. and T. Emeline Harris, aged 9 years and 12 days.
She was sick but a short time when death came to her relief. The many
tearful eyes evidenced how deeply the friends sympathized with the
bereaved parents. But our loss is her eternal gain, for we have every
assurance that when children depart this life they are sure of endless
rest. Therefore, we should not feel grieved at the kind Providence of
God, but strive to meet our little ones in a better and brighter
world. She has left affectionate parents, a loving sister and three
kind brothers, and has gone to live with Jesus.
HARRIS, Rebecca C.
Osceola Sun,
17 October 1878
On the 29th day of August, 1878, at her mother’s residence, in Jackson
Township, St. Clair County, Missouri, Rebecca C., daughter of G.H. and
T. Emeline Harris, aged nine years and twelve days. She died from an
attack of congestive chills, being sick but a short time when Death
came to her relief.
The many tearful eyes about her little bed as she lay resting and
sleeping that slumber which knows no awakening on earth, was a most
touching proof of the love and affection that the friends of the
little cherub held for her. Her stricken parents miss the sound of
little Birdie’s cheerful and happy voice, for the dear form once so
full of joy and life now lies beneath the sod.
But let us not grieve only as having to be separated from this child
for a short period. Jesus had need of her; she has only gone before
and will welcome we hope all her friends in the new Jerusalem. Yes,
she has left kind and tender parents, an affectionate sister, and
three noble and loving brothers to live with the One who said, “Suffer
little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the
kingdom of Heaven.”

Mrs. John Hartzell - "Let not your heart be troubled: Ye believe in
God, believe also in me. In my father's house are many mansions." It
is with these comforting words that we record the going home of one of
our Aid Society Members, Mrs. John Hartzell, who died Feb. 27, 1906.
She had been a great sufferer for a number of years and through it all
manifested a degree of patience and cheerfulness that was wonderful.
Our sympathies go out to her husband and children, while for
ourselves, we are glad that it has been ours to know so sweet a life.
She has been a faithful member of the Christian Church the past four
years.

HAVERLAND, Irvin Albert
Clinton Daily Democrat,
16 August 2004
Irvin Albert Haverland was born April 28, 1919, the first of a pair of
twins, to John Henry and Otilla (Neuenschwander) Haverland, at their
home south of Deepwater, and in the Valley Center community. He died
July 27, 2004. Irvin attended school at Valley Center School, where he
and his twin brother walked to school each day. He carried his lunch
to school in an old syrup tin. Growing up in the Valley Center UCC,
Irvin went through confirmation. He later took an active role in the
church, serving on the cemetery committee and as deacon and elder for
several terms. To him, working for his church was a privilege, as well
as a duty. On May 9, 1954, he married Barbara Jones at Valley Center
UCC. They made their home two miles north of Lowry City on the farm
where they have lived for over 50 years. To this union three children
were born. Later, he gladly welcomed a son-in-law and three
grandchildren. His principle hobbies were collecting barbed wire
samples and fishing. He loved taking his children fishing and later
his nephews, Jeremy Boucher. Not only did he teach several young
people to fish, but it often gave him quality time with his own
children and Jeremy. He was a self-starter when it came to farming. He
really appreciated the farm life, the outdoors and the
responsibilities that went with the job. Melvin and Irvin were never
hesitant to try a new method of product. They were the first ones to
make silage out of high moister corn and had one of the first
four-wheel drive pickups in the county. Irvin finally retired from
farming at the age of 80 as his health declined. After retirement, his
job then was watching his grandchildren grow and watching baseball
games on television. He especially enjoyed the occasional trip to
Branson and the music shows. Irvin very gladly served his country in
World War II. He was a staff sergeant with an antitank company. His
90th Division was called the Tough Ombres. He earned several campaign
ribbons, a Purple Heart, and a Bronze Star for single-handedly
knocking an enemy tank out of commission. He also received the Sharp
Shooters Medal. His service years were in the European Theater. He was
in several countries and in several battles. Among them was the D-Day
invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. He belonged to several groups,
mostly farm-related; The Missouri Trappers, soil and water programs,
the Missouri Farm Bureau and the Missouri Cattlemen's Association to
name a few. He was a lifetime alumni member of the Lakeland FFA. He
also served a term as a school board director on the Lowry City School
Board. He was chosen with Barbara and his family as Farm Family in
1966 for St. Clair County. He and Melvin were both stewards of the
soil they used. Irvin was preceded in death by his parents and his
younger brother, Raymond. He leaves his wife Barbara, of the home; his
son Alan; daughter Julie; daughter Laurie Stinnett; son-in-law Dick
Stinnett, and his grandchildren, Amber, Jordan and Lauren Stinnett,
all of rural Deepwater. He also leaves his sister, Irene Haverland;
his brother Melvin Haverland and his wife Maxine, and sister-in-law,
Olga Haverland, plus several nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, his
church family and friends. He was tired of the trials of this earth
and only his Lord could give him rest. His departure from this earth
is definitely a release of constant pain for Irvin. He will be missed
by family and friends and be welcomed by Jesus, his lifelong
companion. Services were held Friday, July 30, at Valley Center United
Church of Christ. Interment was in the Valley Center Cemetery.

For God would have it so; -
As for us we still are wondering -
Why it is you were to go.

HERN, Jonathan
Voice of the People,
Wednesday, 3 March 1880
In Memoriam -
Pleasant View Grange number 1,526, Missouri, passed the following
resolutions on the death of Brother Jonathan Hern, who was born on
the eastern shore of Maryland, October 30th, A.D., 1813. He came from
thence while quite young, with his parents, to Clinton County, Ohio,
and after he had grown up to manhood he removed to Jay County, Indiana,
at which place he married Miss Louisa Mason, and with her moved to
Benton County, Missouri, in the fall of 1858. From thence he moved
to St. Clair County, in the spring of 1860, where he remained with
his family (with the exception of some travel during the late war)
until the day of his death, Feb. 23rd, 1880. The remains of deceased
were deposited in their last resting place in the usual form of the
order, under instructions of W.M., P.H. Clear.
Whereas. - It has pleased the Supreme ruler of the universe to call
from our midst our worthy brother, Jonathan Hern, of Pleasant View
Grange, number 1,526; therefore be it.
Resolved. - That the order has lost a faithful laborer, the family
a devoted companion and father. He has passed from us pure in character
and full of honor. It can fall to the lot of but few to die amid so
warm a gratitude flowing from the hearts of their brother neighbors
and friends.
Resolved. - That the State has lost one of its best citizens - one
who always set the example of Christian piety and morality, and the
neighborhood has lost one of its kindest neighbors.
Resolved. - That we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved
companion and friends.
Resolved. - That these resolutions be spread on the record of the
Grange, and a copy transmitted to the county papers for publication,
also a copy of the same be furnished the friends of the deceased.

HIGGINS, Bessie Disney
St. Clair County Courier,
Friday, 23 May 2008
I was born October 21, 1902. the daughter of F.E. and Nancy Olive
[Wisner] Disney. I grew up in the foothills of the beautiful Ozark
Mountains, six miles east of Osceola. My parents were hard working
country people and we never measured our richess in dollars and cents.
It was in these hills, with my two brothers I learned to ride, swim,
fish, trap and shoot. In fact I was the tom boy in our community.
Except for my first grade, I attended Dillon School near my home
graduating from the eighth grade. In those days, we didn't have buses
to pick us up. We walked over the hills and through the pastures for a
distance of one and one-half miles. We seldom missed a day and were
not tardy.
My parents were devout Christians and Sunday morning we children
attended Sunday School. My father always went with us. Since our
community did not have a church building our meetings were held in the
school house. Once a month we had preaching and usually a revival once
a year. At the age of 12, I was converted in a revival meeting held by
Mr. W. K. Henderson of Osceola.
I attended high school at Osceola and in 1922 graduated with a
two-year state certificate to teach and the most wonderful boyfriend
in the world, Clarence A. Higgins, son of Charles E. Higgins. I taught
school two years. In June 1924 I married Clarence. We have had
wonderful children; Alliene, Joan, Jean and Ray.
Family members preceding her in death were her husband, Clarence;
daughter Alliene Hendricks and husband Joe; daughter Joan Purvis
Piepmeier and husband Maurice Purvis; son-in-law Dell Arduser;
grandson Stephen Hendricks and granddaughter Carol Daulton.

husband John; Michael Higgins and wife Nora; Dennis Higgins and wife
Linda; 13 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; thre
great-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild.

HILLEGAS, Judge Charles Edgar
Lowry City Independent,

Judge C.E. Hillegas Passes -
The people of Lowry City and community were shocked and saddened last
Friday, at the news of the sudden death of Judge C.E. Hillegas, which
occurred at his farm home two miles northeast of Lowry City at about 2
o’clock that afternoon.
Mr. Hillegas had been building some new windows into the kitchen at
his home. At the noon hour he ate dinner, and a short time later
became ill and was obliged to lie down. He suffered intense pains
about the heart and stomach and became very sick. Mrs. Hillegas
telephoned to Dr. Leo S. Wright and was given instructions as to what
should be done for her husband’s relief, but within a few minutes time
she called the doctor again and told him to come at once. Dr. Wright
left immediately for the Hillegas home, accompanied by Mr. Hillegas’
brother, J.W. Hillegas, who was in Lowry City at the time.
Mr. Hillegas had passed away before they arrived, he having breathed
his last while his little daughter, Irene, held his head in her hands.
Mrs. Hillegas and daughter were the only members of the family with
him at the time, a son, Gene, the other member of the home circle,
having gone to a neighbor’s after some medicine for his father’s
relief.
In a lifetime spent in St. Clair County, the county of his birth,
Charlie Hillegas has enjoyed a wide circle of friends, and since his
election to the office of Presiding Judge of the St. Clair County
Court, in 1926, he has enlarged this acquaintance until it reaches
into all parts of the county.
On Sunday afternoon, friends and relatives gathered at the Lowry City
M.E. Church to attend the funeral services. The church was filled to
overflowing, with one of the largest crowds that ever attended a
funeral in this city. Many were unable to get inside the building and
stood in groups in the church yard during the services.
Following the service at the church, the body was conveyed to the
Lowry City cemetery where interment was made.
Charles Edgar Hillegas, eldest son of William and Huldah Hillegas, was
born in St. Clair county, Missouri, July 9, 1869, at the old homestead
now owned and occupied by his brother, J.W. Hillegas, 4 miles
northeast of Lowry City, and died April 26, 1929, at the age of fifty
nine years, nine months and seventeen days.
In this locality he grew to manhood and on December 31, 1890, he was
united in marriage with Miss Nettie Gonser. To this union ten children
were given, all of whom survive with their mother. They are: William
Edgar Hillegas of Kansas City, Kansas; Mrs. Bernice Amos of Madison,
Saskatchewan, Canada; Dan Hillegas of Lowry City; Mrs. Faye Nichols of
Oak Park, Illinois; Harley Hillegas of Kansas City, Missouri, and Mrs.
Hazel Stewart of Lowry City, twins; George Hillegas of Lowry City;
Gene Hillegas of the home; Mrs. Ina May Neuenschwander of Moberly,
Missouri, and Irene Hillegas of the home.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren; his aged parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Wm. Hillegas of Lowry City; two brothers, J.W. and M.E. Hillegas,
and three sisters, Mrs. T.S. Wears, Mrs. D.M. Cooper and Mrs. B.C.
Shepherd, all residents of Lowry City or community.
At the age of eighteen he was converted and united with the Methodist
Church, in which organization he held membership until his death. He
took an active part in the life of his church, having served on its
board of stewards; as superintendent and teacher in its Sunday school,
and as a member of the choir.
In 1926, he was elected to serve the county of his birth as presiding
judge of the county court, and held that office with honor and
distinction. His fairness to all people, in the important discharge of
his duties, endeared him to his associates and those with whom he came
in contact.
Mr. Hillegas was a member of Lowry City Camp 5412, Modern Woodmen of
America.
Funeral services were conducted at the Lowry City M.E. Church at 2:30
o’clock Sunday afternoon by the Rev. Roy Brown of Grace M.E. church at
Osceola. The music consisted of favorite hymns of the deceased: “The
Old Rugged Cross”, “Golden Bells”, “Asleep in Jesus”, “It Is Well With
My Soul”. Interment was in the Lowry City Cemetery.
Pall bearers were: H.A. Haverland, E.C. Crump, E.M. Cooper, W.M.
Foster, Clem Browning and Wm. Bunch.
The many friends in Lowry City and community join in extending deep
sympathy to the family in their bereavement.
