STORIES WANTED   27 Jun 2006

If you ever want to murder someone, and get away with it, do it in Maries County.

Does this statement ring a bell? Children were to be seen and not heard when I was a kid growing up in Maries County, so therefore I spent a lot of time just listening. I probably heard a lot of things that weren’t meant for my ears, but I couldn’t tell you what they were to save my soul. Except for this statement: If you ever want to murder someone, and get away with it, do it in Maries County. I remember mulling that one over in my mind each time the words were spoken. After hearing them two or three times, I decided I would have to blow my cover and admit to listening to the adults’ conversation if I ever wanted to understand what that statement meant. As it turned out, I was banished to play outside or at least in another part of the house when the adults were talking and I never got a straight answer. The answer was, simply, it was none of my concern.

My curiosity faded over the years, though the words never completely left my mind. As an adult, I have heard people say: You know what they say, don’t ya? If you ever want to murder someone, and get away with it, do it in Maries County. Nobody really seems to think a thing of it. But I wonder what this would sound like to a stranger passing through? An adult stranger would probably finish business as quickly as possible and get out of town. But the stranger’s child would more likely ask what it meant, why did the person say it, and how come?

My child-like curiosity returned a couple of years ago after starting to work on a family tree. I purchased King’s history of Maries County and began reading. His chapter on the Civil War is very enlightening. Even though Maries County only had one battle in which lives were lost for the entire duration of the war, approximately 100 outright murders were committed. It finally dawned on me the statement of murder in Maries County originated long before my parents or my grandparents time. It must have started during the Civil War years. Over time, most everyone probably forgot how the claim actually started. But on those certain occasions, when the old saying seemed to appropriately fit the conversation, it was revived.

King’s History does name a few of these murders, but for the most part there is no evidence to even show who the unfortunate ones were. Our courthouse was burned in 1868, therefore destroying anything that may have been on paper prior to that time, and the records after 1868 prove that very rarely did a murder case go to trial. My own great-great grandfather was accused of murder in 1871, and was acquitted. Then he mysteriously disappeared in 1875 never to be seen again. I had a great-grandfather who died in 1950 under suspicious circumstances, but since there weren’t any witnesses, nothing ever came of it. There isn’t anything in the records to show his death may have not been from natural causes. I only know because I heard my grandfather speak of it.

Listening to stories passed down from generation to generation about the pioneers of Maries County has become one of my favorite things to do. Recently, I decided to actually compile a history of these people and their lives so there will be a recording for future generations. People don’t seem to have time to sit around and tell stories about the old days anymore, and before long, there will be no one who remembers any of the stories to tell.

If you have a favorite story about Maries County, or if you know someone I should speak to, please contact me by phone, mail, or email using the information listed below. The stories don’t necessarily have to be about murder, they can be about anything of interest that occurred in Maries County from its beginning in 1856 until 1980. I can assure you if the story-teller wishes to remain anonymous, they will remain anonymous.

BOWLES-COPPEDGE  12 Feb 2006

Looking for any information on WILLIAM and NANCY COPPAGE BOWLES who lived in early Phelps County, Big Piney area - they were first listed in Pulaski and Crawford before these counties became Phelps. Am also interested in the following report:

In the Pulaski County History 1889, page 125, there is the following line: "In 1847, Nancy Bowles was the first person indicted for murder..."

Unfortunately no other information is given on this. It is possible that this was Nancy Coppedge Bowles, or a daughter of William and Nancy Coppedge Bowles or was it a neice or sister-in-law of William Bowles.

The Courthouse was burned after that date and has no record of this situation. It is interesting that William and Nancy Coppedge Bowles apparently moved to Reynolds county not long after 1847, perhaps in 1850.

Pitts, Bastone, Hetchel, Hutsel, Hutsell etc   14 Dec 2005

I am looking for the marriage of Elizabeth Hetchel possibly between 1874 -1884 in Phelps County or ??? History written about my family says she married Henry Pitts but I cannot find any record of that. I found a marriage record for Hyrum Pitts to Elin Hutchel 8 Mar 1867, Phelps County, MO. but my Henry would have only been about 13 years old at this time and I do not believe that this is what I am looking for. I know that Layfayette Pitts married Mary F. Shanks on 4 Aug 1873, St. James township, Phelps County but he also was supposedly married twice so I am also looking for any record of marriage of a Jane Bastone to a Marion Lafayette Pitts. Drewry Pitts was another brother to Marion and Henry who married a Susan Hutsel. I know she only lived about a year after they married. I have found various spellings of the Hetchel name. These were all 1st. marriages of short duration. I know Susan died but I don't know about the other two. I would like to have information on the Hetchels or Bastones and how they connected to the Pitts family. Dixie dbobbitt@misn.com

GOODMAN  30 Sep 2005

I am searching for my Goodman family in Kentucky, who originally came through Tennessee, and Missouri, (Gasconade and Phelps Counties Census). I wonder if anyone has come across them in their research, and would be willing to share information with me.

My great grandfather was Henry Albert Goodman, who joined the army at Binton Barracks during the civil war as a boy in Rolla, MO. and was discharged at Louisville, KY, and remained there the rest of his life. His father was Martin Goodman, from TN, according to the census records of 1850 and 1860. Here is some of the information I have gathered on them:

The 1850 U.S. census for Canaan Township, Gasconade Co., Missouri taken on Oct. 29, 1850 lists: Martin Goodman, age 37, Male, farmer, born in Tennessee; Martha J. Goodman, age 14, Female; William J. Goodman, age 12, Male; John Goodman, age 10, male; Henry A. Goodman, age 8, and living next door was: William Goodman, age 56, Male, Blacksmith from Tennessee; Rohdin Goodman, age 55, Female from Tennessee.

The 1860 U.S. Census for Rolla Twp., Phelps Co., MO, Pg.028, lists: J.M. Goodman 47, Male, Farmer, $600 personal property, $600 worth of land, from KY; E. Goodman, 39, Female from Virginia; J.L. Goodman, 17, Male, farmer from MO; H. A. Goodman, 15, Male, farmer from MO; M.C. Goodman, 4, Female from MO; E.M. Goodman, 9Mo., Male, from MO; J. Fuller, 14, Male, from Virginia; M. Ch----?, 22, Female, from TN. (This indicates that Martin was remarried sometime before 1855, and Henry had at least two half siblings. We don't know what to do with the 22 yr old F). Also the 1860 census, on Pg. 029 lists Henry's Brother Wm, now 24 years old as working as a laborer on a near-by farm owned by James Spengar? and family: Wm Goodman, 24, Male, Labour with $50 in personal property, and from MO.

Volunteer Enlistment: state of Missouri, town of Rolla, county of Gasconade; age 18, occupation- farmer, on the 7th day of Sept. 1862 (blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, height 5 ft. 6in.) Binton Barracks, MO. Company E, 32nd Regiment of MO. Infantry, for 3 years. It was reported he died on Jan. 27, 1863 on board steamer "Isabella", however he was reported absent on March & April 1863 roll call - as sick at St. Louis, MO since Jan. 23, 1863 (remained absent until roll call of March & April 1864) On May 29, 1865, they combined the Batt'n 31 & 32. He mustered out in Louisville KY on July 18, 1865. Clothing account from April to July was due $5.73; due $100 on arms and equipment. Bruce D. Burton

REGISTER, JOHN WM. & MISSOURI CASTLEMAN 14 August 2005

My name is Sheryl (Beck) Pullium and I am looking for any information on my Great-Great grandparents; John William Register and his wife Missouri Elizabeth Castleman. Some resources list his birth as January 26, 1872 in Missouri , however this cannot be correct as their marriage is recorded in Phelps Co Missouri Book 4 page 264 and Dent Co Missouri Marriage Records dated 1851-1878. Her birth date is listed as January 19, 1865 in some places and 1866 in others. They were married in Phelps County Missouri. My lineage is as follows:

John William Register- married Missouri Elizabeth Castleman. They had 6 children; all born in MO; 2 died in MO. Everett Leroy, Charles Raymond, Hamilton Vernon and Georgia Irene. Georgia Irene Register at some point moved to Illinois and married Charles F Beck in Sangamon County. They had 5 children; Glen William, June, Dolores, Charles F Jr and Donald. Glen William married Dorothy Crosby in St Louis, Mo. They had 5 children; one died at child birth; Charles F, Glen William Jr, Bernard Michael and Glenda Elien. Bernard Michael is my father.

I really dont have much info on John and Missouri Register other than she was blind and adopted from a Cherokee chief by Osborne David and Trithina Castleman. Her birth date could actually be her adoptive birth date. Sources show she was born in Rolla, Phelps, MO. I can't find much info on John William Register other than his fathers' name was Elijah Register who was born around 1841 in MO and his mother was the former Mary Elizabeth Robinson. John William did have a sister; Georgia Lavina (Register) Castleman that was born April 20, 1879 in MO. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

HUFFMAN, ALFRED FELIX 23 Jun 2005

I am searching for parents and siblings and family bible and other history of my gg grandfather, Alfred Felix Huffman Sr b. 5/8/1798 in Jeffersonton, Culpeper County, Virginia. died 1869 or 1870 and reburied in the Elk Prairie Cemetery , near Rolla, Mo., Phelps County. He was originally buried at the old Huffman farm.

I would also like to know where the farm house was since he had approx 2500 acres in 1857 in the Elk Prairie Area. He married Sarah Janes Jones in Crawford County, Mo in 1835. I have info from an Anna the she thinks his parents might be John and Elizabeth Huffman in Virginia where she had traced their family bible but I do not know exactly who these persons were or their dates. I do have a name of a lady that has the bible and her address so I will try to write her for more information.

Alfreds house was used for a voting place early in Phelps countys history and he was a election judge. I have a notice in the newspaper to the effect that he was not responsible for anyone elses debts. Most important information from the Phelps County Genealogical Society Quarterly in about 1989 was a posting of his diary in about 1837 where he lists trips to virginia etc and items that he sold on the trip and other details he wanted to keep pertaining to family and business affairs. I would like to know where to find this diary so that I could see it, possibly for more information. Any information that you could share would be much appreciated as I would gladly share any info that I have. I am also trying to find civil war info about Alfred and his sons and sons in law, some of whom were union and some confederate as best I can determine.

HUFFMAN-JONES  7 June 2005

I saw a 1999 posting on rootweb forum asking about the Jones surname - namely a Sarah Jane Jones b. 1810 - I wonder if it could be the same Sarah Jane Jones who was my gg grandmother from knox co. tennessee and married a Thomas Calhoun Jones (a cousin) first and when he died in about 1834 she married my gg grandfather Alfred Felix Huffman in 1835 in crawford county Mo and there they raised her 3 sons and 9 more children. Along the way where they were became Phelps County, Mo and their farm was in Elk Prairie where they died in 1869 or 1870. They are buried at the Elk Prairie Cemetery.Alfred was born in Jeffersonton, Culpeper County, Va. in 1798. If this happens to be someone you know about I would appreciate hearing from you since their early years are very sketchy to me.

STEDMAN, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, SR. 14 Mar 2005

I am trying to research my 2nd Great Grandfather, Benjamin Stedman. His trail runs to Phelps County but I don't have any more information then this. Do you know who his parents are? Do you have any information about this man?

Benjamin Franklin STEDMAN, Sr., was born in 1830 in Rolla, Phelps, Missouri, and was buried in Thomas Fairview Cemetery, Phelps Co, Missouri, USA. Noted events in his life were: • He homesteaded a farm before 1861 in Big Dry Fork Creek, South Dillon township, Phelps County, MO

Benjamin married Martha THOMAS, daughter of Charles L THOMAS and Milberry WINTERS, on 1 Sep 1858. Martha was born about 1841 in Missouri, USA, died in 1873 about age 32, and was buried in Thomas Fairview Cemetery, Phelps Co, Missouri, USA. They had five children: William Albert, Charles M., Mary E., Alice A., and Hugh W..

MALONE, JOHN WESLEY 5 Mar 2005

I am looking for information on the marriages of John Wesley Malone, who was born in Phelps County, MO, about 1835. John was the son of Thomas C. and Elizabeth America Vest Malone. According to information from several sources John Wesley was married twice. His first marriage was to Malinda Dawson in June of 1856. Then in August 1857, he married Sarah Emily Matthews. The 1870 census lists him and Sarah with four children: Margaret, 11; Mary J., 10; Henry, 8; Sam J., 5. However, Mary J. (Jane), who was my great grandmother, told my mother (her granddaughter) she (Mary Jane) was raised by a stepmother. This suggests John Wesley was married a third time assuming the marriage dates are accurate. His first marriage (1856) lasted only a few months as the second marriage occurred less than 14 months after the first marriage in 1857. Also, all the children's birthdates show none of them were born early enough to have belonged to the first wife, Malinda Dawson. (Margaret, the oldest, was born in 1858, Mary Jane in 1859.) Can anyone help me clarify this situation? Faye Parker

Help Identify!! 21 Feb 2005

The man with the beard towards the left of the photo is possibly.... William Clayton Shoemate. I have another photo of him and it looks just like him, but I am not positive.

The photo was taken at Lake Springs, MO, and says on the back, "Public Gathering at Lake Springs, Dent or Phelps County, MO, when mother was a girl..about 1890". I'm not quite sure who mother was. I'm really not even sure that is Wm. Shoemate, but I believe it to be him....Dennis photo "Gathering at Lake Spring Shoemate"

ZIMMERMAN-CLEMENTS 20 Jan 2005

I am looking for information on John Clayton Clements who I believe was married to Lucinda Catherine Zimmerman on 1 January 1879 in Phelps Co., MO. Can you tell me to where I would send a request for the original marriage application/license? I am trying to verify that John C. Clements is the son of Pius Richard Clements of Indiana. I wonder if there are any land or probate record indexes in Phelps Co. that might provide additional information. I believe that John C. Clements migrated to MO after 1870 and before 1879 and remained there the rest of his life. I have a possible birth date of 24 January 1857 and death date of 13 May 1906 for him.

GREENSWEIGHT 19 NOV 2004

We are looking for my husband's Missouri ancestors. His mother was Bernice Alta Greensweight Clements, her father, Elmer Elsworth. He was a carpenter and was with the railroad. She--Cora Jane Maxwell Greensweight, ran a boarding house in Rolla for college students and they raised 8 children, all born in Rolla. A Lincoln Greensweight, born in PA, lived in Phelps Co., and married Ida Green, born in MO abt 1870. Their 2 oldest children, Blanche and Guy were also born in MO--probably Phelps Co. Apparently there were earlier Greensweights who lived in Phelps Co.

We think my husband's great grandfather was Stephen Greensweight, b. abt 1838 in PA and are looking to confirm. Also have found a Sarah Greensweight, buried in the Rolla Cemetery, listed as 2nd wife of "S." Is that the same Stephen?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. We plan to be in Rolla early next April to spend time visiting cemeteries, etc., to further our search.

Thank you.
