The Rolla New Era
Rolla, Missouri
May 17, 1884

Died, in Dillon Township, Phelps County, Mo., on May 13, 1884,
Mrs. LOUISA J BEELER, daughter of SAMUEL ASH, residing near
Iberia, Miller County, Mo., and wife of JOHN BEELER, deceased, in
the 58th year of her age.

Mrs. BEELER was born in Holston, Scott County, Virginia, in 1826,
and soon after her marriage removed with her husband to Rutledge,
Tennessee, where in 1852 they emigrated to their late home, now
their final resting place. She was brought up in the faith of
the Lutheran Church, but united with the Methodist Church in
obedience to the wishes of her husband. She was a kind neighbor,
an industrious housekeeper, a good wife and loving mother;
filling the measure of the inspired Psalmist.

"Lord my heart is not haughty.
   Nor mine eyes lofty;
Neither do I exercise myself in great matters,
   Or in things too high for me.

Surely I have behaved and quieted myself,
   As a child that is weaned of its mother;
My soul is even as a weaned child.

Let Israel hope in the Lord,
   From henceforth and forever."

Died, in Rolla, April 18, 1886, JENNIE W. MORRIS, infant daughter
of Mrs. JENNIE MORRIS. Born January 5th, 1883, aged 3 years and
3 months. The funeral services were held at the house Monday
afternoon, April 19th, at 2:30. Widow MORRIS has the sympathy of
her many friends in her deep affliction.

Tender Shepherd, thou hast stilled,
  Now Thy little lamb's brief weeping;
Ah! how peaceful, pale, and mild,
  In its narrow bed 'tis sleeping!
And no sigh of anguish bore,
  Heaves that little bosom more.

In this world of care and pain,
  Lord, Thou would'st no longer leave it;
To the sunny heavenly plain,
  Thou dost now with joy receive it;
Clothed in robes of spotless white,
  Now it dwells with Thee in light.

                     -- B.F. Poole.

EDWARD LUSTER, who died August 25th after a lingering illness at
Rolla, Mo., where for a short time he had resided, was born May
1, 1807, in Wayne County Kentucky. He immigrated to Gasconade
in 1834 and lived here excepting a short time ever since. He was
one of the earliest settlers of this county and as time rolled on
he gathered a good share of this world's goods, yet maintaining
an untarnished reputation for honesty, fidelity and Christian
love.

A large concourse of friends and relatives gathered at the grave
on Iron Hill Cemetery near Cleavesdale, to pay their last tribute
of respect to the honored dead.

The departed leaves an aged widow and several grown children whom
God may comfort and help to strive to meet again in that land
where parting is no more.

The Rolla New Era
Rolla, Missouri
October 3, 1891
Again has the silent visitor entered our little valley and this
time has called away a grand mother who was loved and respected
by all who knew her. Mrs. JUDITH SHATTUCK was born October 15,
1816, died Sept. 23, 1891, was 74 years, 11 months and 18 days
old.

She was married to S.N. SHATTUCK in 1834. They lived together 45
years. S.N SHATTUCK was born December 1, 1810, and died June 6,
1879. They had nine children. Three are dead and six are
living. GEORGE is in Wisconsin, B.F. is in Ohio, MARTHA is in
Indian Territory, ELIZABETH is in Kansas, D.C. and ELIZA are here
in Missouri. Grandma was very energetic in her younger days but
of late years her health had been failing and she gave up very
reluctantly, but all the summer passed she had been very feeble
and on the above date she had to yield the cold hand of death and
we laid her in the silent city of the dead in the old church yard
by the side of her companion with whom she lived, loved and
toiled for forty-five years.

The funeral services were conducted by the writer, and here we
record our last farewell to a good neighbor, a kind friend and an
affectionate mother.

Little MAGGIE MAY DILLON, who was born Oct. 31, 1890, died after
about nine days illness, of congestion of the brain, March 27, at
2 o'clock a.m. 1895. Her little brother, CARL, just preceded her
to that heavenly land two weeks to a day. She leaves one
brother, ELMER, and father and mother, with a host of relatives
and friends to mourn her loss. MAGGIE was the very picture of
health and a lovely little girl.

"But lovely of loveliest things are they,
On earth that soonest pass away;
The rose that blooms its little hour
Is prized beyond the sculptored flower."

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.C. Willey at 4
o'clock, March 27, at the Wishon Cemetery.

*She was buried 2 hours after she died; apparently of a
contagious disease. Very sad.

Died at his home on Little Piney, near Yancy Mills, Phelps
County, on November 26, 1895, Mr. JAMES LANE, aged 63 years, 8
months and 14 days. He was born in Putnam County, Ind., March
12, 1832. His death was caused by typhoid fever and neuralgia of
the breast. It makes our hearts ache to give up our dear father,
relatives or friends, but God knows what is best. Just before
his death he had been praying, and his last words were "God is
with me." What a comfort to the bereaved widow and children.

The deceased leaves two children -- GEORGE W. LANE and MARY J.
KING -- two sisters and one brother, Mrs. RUHAMA ZIMMERMAN, Mrs.
ABBIE GILL WISHON and Mr. PLEASANT LANE, who will miss his kind
welcome. Let this thought comfort the surviving relatives and
friends. All his afflictions are over; his trust was in the Lord
and He is able to keep that which is committed to him.

His remains were laid to rest in the Beaver Cemetery on Thursday,
November 28, 1895.

We miss thee from our home, father,
  We miss thee from thy place;
A shadow o'er our lives is cast,
  We miss the sunshine of thy face,
We miss thy kind and willing hand,
  Thy fond and earnest care;
Our home is dark without thee,
  We miss thee everywhere.

                        -- Mrs. Mary J. King,
                           Yancy Mills, Mo., Jan. 4, 1896.
