RESEARCH SERVICES AVAILABLE
Thank you for your interest in the Old Mines Area Historical Society, Inc. From our beginnings in 1977 we have been able to provide family history information for countless descendants of the early settlers of this area. Our acquisitions are expanding and new information is available periodically.
Our files contain documentation from Catholic Church records, i.e., baptisms, marriages and burials belonging to St Joachim Church of Old Mines, St. Stephens Church of Richwoods and St. Rose of Lima Church in De Soto. We also have many reference books on early French settlements of the Mississippi Valley: Vincennes, Kaskaskia, Fort de Chartres, Prairie du Rocher, St Louis and Ste Genevieve.
This collection is constantly growing through acquisitions and donations. Other researchers also continually donate copies of their family histories and ancestral charts to our files - many proving ties to the ancient French Canadian families. We also have access to some census and land records, and some slave records of baptisms, marriages, burials, and bits and pieces of everyday life then.
Unlike other historical societies with access to public facilities to house their collections, OMAHS has had to build and maintain its own archive building. Therefore, we find it necessary to charge a fee for researching each surname. The cost is $20.00 per surname, payable in advance. This entitles the customer to all available statistics in your DIRECT ANCESTRAL LINE. If requested, family group sheets can be provided for an additional cost of one dollar (printing charge) per sheet. These family group sheets, researched by Mr. Alvin Politte for over 25 years, may contain important information on collateral family lines.
To facilitate a search, certain information is vital: time frame (approximate birth, marriage and death dates) locations, siblings names, if known. Every little bit will help our researcher identify your particular line. If interested in our services, enclose your surname information with a check for $20.00 payable to OMAHS and mail to:
