Married Saturday Aug 7 at the courthouse, by Rev. Lowe, Westley Hedges and Maggie Johnson of Portageville.

Richard Mott and daughter Miss Hettie were in town last Friday. Miss Laura Digges, the accomplished daughter of Mr and Mrs. T. H. Diggs, returned last Thursday from a protracted visit to Virginia and Sedalia. Born in this city Sunday Aug 8, to Mr. And Mrs. Henry Ransburg, a fine girl, the first that has blessed their union.

Capt. B. B. Bradley�s towboat Fritz, blew up 10 miles below Cairo Aug 9. Ten men missing and four scalded badly.

Elvin Raney and Luther Mitchell, two young men from Mississippi county, on returning from Cairo last Saturday where they had been with watermen, fought and resulted in the death of Raney from knife wounds. Mitchell was acquitted by the coroner�s jury.

School report � Pupils who have not been absent during the month are: Emma Shanks, Jessie Crow, Bettie Shanks, Oscar Mainerd, Welton Shanks, Tommy Brooks.

Harry Hertwick and Miss Ida Morris of Gayoso were married August 1 at Caruthersville.

Thur Aug 19,1897 (Vol 3 No. 36) Southeast Missourian. New Madrid, MO Mrs. Geo. W. Steel and daughter Amy left last Sat for a protracted visit to relatives in Ohio, PA, and VA.

Mr. Emory Marston and wife, with their daughter Anna, from Dexter, Iowa, and Mrs. F. Crenshaw, from Stronghurst, Il are visiting S. S. Barnes and family. Mr. Marston and Mrs. Crenshaw are brother and sister of Mrs. Barnes.

Mrs. Barnes and daughters, Miss Georgie and Mrs. Frank Smith of Sikeston are visiting their cousin Mrs. Wm. Buesching this week.

Henry DeBow and Miss Minnie Thomasson were married Sunday afternoon, aug 8 at the home of C. P. Caldwell, three miles south of Kennett. The bride is the eldest daughter of John Thomasson. The groom is a competent mechanic who was raised at Malden, but has been here more than a year (Kennett Democrat)

While drunk, H. C. Smith, a butcher, was struck by a train at Poplar Bluff and almost instantly killed.
