Stars of Hollywood’s first Technicolor film, Darryl F. Zanuck’s 1939 production of “Jesse James,” resided in several McDonald County domiciles. Because the leading star, Tyrone Power, seemed too genteel for life at our rustic McDonald County cabins, Zanuck flew him back to California between Power’s filming takes. However, one brave soul, Academy Award winner and Hollywood legend, Henry Fonda, became enthralled with life at the Elk River. For the entire year of filming work, Fonda resided here in a log cabin, lighted only by kerosene lamps. Today, we continue to enjoy and proudly preserve Fonda’s relaxing home site, a cabin near Pineville, pictured here.
