The Historical Society
of Maries County is a non-profit corporation founded in 1956
to collect and preserve information pertaining to historic
events of Maries County:
to assume responsibility for proper recognition and
preservation of various historical landmarks, relics,
souvenirs, and Missouriana, and to engender a rightful pride
in the history of Maries County and the State of Missouri.
Through its
publications, special programs and exhibits, the Society
perpetuates the history and traditions of Maries County.
The Research Room in
the Maries County courthouse in Vienna contains the
Society’s holdings of old county records, member-contributed
family charts and records, published genealogies and other
research materials. Open
Wednesdays, 1-4 p.m.
Members of the Society
also maintain three museums in Vienna: the Old Jail
Museum and the Felker and Latham Log Houses, all built in
the 1850’s.
Membership is $15.00 per calendar year, and will bring you four issues of the quarterly, THE MARIES COUNTIAN. Click here for a membership application for your convenience. A news-quarterly mailed to members of the organization, features articles from a myriad of sources. This illustrated publication contains material of value to those interested in local history as well as the researcher of genealogical data on Maries County families. Its pages bring a wealth of information from past newspapers, birth, marriage and death records, and transcriptions from various collections and compilations of knows facts and reminiscences. Material is gleaned from old ledgers, documents and registers to guide the reader through Maries County’s past. Included are items and stories of general interest and communications from members in all areas of the country.
Finding Your Maries County Roots
Research in person:
The Research Room, located in the basement of the Maries County
Court House, is open every Wednesday between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00
p.m. and is free to all researchers, including
non-members. Volunteers are available to assist
researchers. Due to the variety of resource material in
our collections as well as limited staff resources, a personal
visit is strongly encouraged.
Research by mail:
A comprehensive search can be conducted by our volunteer
genealogist for a fee of $10 per research hour, with a two hour
minimum charge. Photo copies are 25 cents each.
Payment is required in advance.
Successful research results cannot be
guaranteed. The more information you gie us to start, the
better the chances are for a successful search. Please
give us as much specific information as possible for the
families for whom you are seeking information including:
First and last name
Family: such as siblings, spouses and children
Places and dates: births, deaths, marriages and residences
