Joseph Schooling came to Barry County, now Lawrence county, in 1836 and served as the first presidind Judge of the County Court in 1845. He and his first wife Polly Fraim had 11 children after the death of Polly he married Margaret Wilson and they had three children. Joseph died December 15, 1850 and is buried in Schooling Cemetery, north of Pierce City.

Directions from Mt. Vernon: I-44 West to exit 38, take 97 south toward Pierce City to LC 2160 and turn right. Follow 2160 to LC 1030. GPS coordinates are 37.04000, -94.02330.
