Although the sketch appears in Barry Co. Goodspeed, James C LeGrand originally settled in Lawrence County. The names and references may be of interest to the list. Does anyone know if James C (c1811-Feb 1880) and Jesse LeGrand were related?, brothers? James C. LEGRAND (deceased) was born about 1811 near Bowling Green, Ky. He was reared in his native State, remaining there until about 1840, when he came to Missouri and located in Lawrence county on the farm where Daniel BROWN now resides. After a number of years he purchased land where Peirce City now stands, on which he resided until the town was laid off. He then sold his farm and purchased land in Capp's Creek Township, Barry County, on which he spent the remainder of his life. He engaged in farming during his entire life, and was very successful. He gave each of his children a good farm, and owned eighty acres at the time of his death. He married Eliza WILLIAMS, of Lawrence county, who bore him three children, viz: Melissa B. (wife of John PITTMAN, of Barry County), John JACK, who came from Tennessee to Missouri about 1853, and died in the latter State in 1857. Mrs. Rachel LEGRAND was born in Rhea County, Tenn., in 1832, and when six years of age came to Southwest Missouri, where she was reared. One son was born to her marriage with Mr. LEGRAND, James E., who lives on the old homestead. The father died on February 8, 1880. He was one of the highly respected citizens of the county, and a devoted member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. James E LEGRAND was born in Peirce City, Mo., on January 28, 1865, and was reared on his father's farm. At the age of eighteen he wedded Jane W. ROSS, a daughter of P.W. ROSS, of Newton County, Mo. She was born July 9, 1864. To her and husband have been born two children: Dora R and DeWitt W. All the family are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. James C LEGRAND was a Democrat, as is also his son, James E.
