Union Cemetery

Union Cemetery

Entrance, 2815 Walnut Street, Kansas City, MO Contributed by Mrs. Max A. Christopher

It has been said, "A history of a community is written upon the tombstones in the cemeteries
of that community." It is deeply regrettable that so much of the early history of our community
has been lost by the destruction of the stones of those early cemeteries.

The first burials in the vacinity now known as Kansas City, were the family burying grounds. The early residents, having no
other alternative, formed the habit of reserving, on their farms, from a half to an acre of ground upon
which to bury their dead. Thus on the farms of the McCoy, McGee, and Smart families were found these
family burying grounds, typical of many others to be seen in the neighborhood in the early 1830's.

As the community known as Kansas City grew, the same mistake was made as was made in many other parts of the
country; there was no adequate provision for the protection of such burial places as already existed, hence
much interesting history has been lost.

In the minds of a great number of residents of Kansas City today, Union Cemetery, established in 1858, remains
the oldest of all the urban cemeteries. As a matter of fact, a great number of burial places such as
those mentioned above, have either been vacated or erased by the rapidly growing city with its tall buildings
and paved streets.

In fact, Union Cemetery was not established until after the cemetery at 5th and Oak Streets, established in 1847 as
the first City cemetery, was found to be inadequate. The location for the new cemetery was halfway between
the town called Kansas (Kansas City), and the community known as Westport, so placed that it might meet the
needs of both places. We are told that when this cemetery was established, "Away out beyond O.K. Creek," its
49 acres would solve the problem of the community for all time to come. It must be remembered that Kansas City was,
at that time, a village of about three thousand persons. It is interesting to note, also, that at this time the south
"city limits" were 12th Street, while the North line of the 49 acres selected for Union Cemetery was what we know
today (1933) as 27th Street.

The remains of many of the early pioneers of the community were removed to this cemetery as is evidenced by the
number of stones found there which have dates showing that death occurred years before there was a Union Cemetery. Tradition says that there are more than 1,000 soldiers of the Civil War buried in this cemetery, and less than 400
of them are marked with permanent markers. It is a well-known fact that there are hundreds of other graves there
which are unmarked.

The late Mrs. Beverly Tucker Thompson, mother of Mrs. Nettie Thompson Grove, secretary of the Missouri Valley Historical
Society of Kansas City, attended the first funeral in Union Cemetery. This was the funeral of a child who was a patient of
Dr. Thomas B. Lester, uncle of Mrs. Thompson, nee Miss Heron, at whose home she was visiting.

In more recent years, there have been removals from Union Cemetery to Elmwood (1872), Forest Hill (1888), Mount Washington (1900), and to others of the more recently established cemeteries. At this date, however, there are yet occasional burials
in this historic cemetery, which a few years ago was reduced in acreage. The entrance, which for many years was at 28th
and Main streets, was changed to 28th and Walnut Streets, when Walnut Street was cut through the cemetery property and a large
block of the ground was taken for business property.

Great care has been taken in copying for this publication, a list of the early lot owners, together with the block and lot
number.

These records were copied from the original cemetery records loaned through the courtesy of Mr. Louis W. Shouse and Mr. Walton
H. Holmes, members of the Union Cemetery Association. Mrs. Max A. Christopher
