Six Mile Baptist Church Cemetery

Section 7, Township 50, Range 30W

Six Mile Cemetery has always been associated with Six-Mile Baptist Church, one of the oldest churches in the county. This church was founded June 19, 1825, and was so-called because it lay within the 6 mile square area designed for settlement, about 5 miles West of Fort Osage. First meeting under tres or in the Fort, the first log structure was erected about 1 mile West of the present building, and N of the "old Indian trace" that became the Independence-Lexington portion of the Santa Fe Trail. Founders were Elder William Thorpe, Jeremiah Hall, Abraham Grooms, and Abraham Creek.

The first of several fires that have plagued this congregation occurred in 1859, and the church was rebuilt on the present site by land donated by Col. James Chiles. Originally, the Lexington Road (now Blue Mills Road) ran South of the church. This building burned in 1904, and was replaced with another frame structure, which burned Jan. 13, 1971. The church was then rebuilt with the present brick building.

Records of the cemetery and burials were lost when the church burned, and it is unknown if there were any burials associated with the first log structure which was about 1/16 mile N of Blue Mills Road, on the grounds of the Hudspeth family. Apparently burials were resumed near the new location in 1859, although the oldest stone found was dated 1864.

Buried here were many travelers traversing the Santa Fe Trail, Indians, and perhaps soldiers killed in the battle that raged from Kansas City through Independence to Lexington in the Civil War. Many slaves and unidentified paupers were buried in special sections. The cholera epidemic of the 1849-1860 period contributed many victims also. The US Government reserved rights to bury there until 1930, and no records survive of these burials.

After the latest fire in 1971, the cemetery administration was separated from the church, and an attempt was made to reconstruct a plat of burials from the memories of those who had family members there. This is only partially successful, and although burila are continuing, there is no assurance that there will not be intrusion upon an occupied space.

I have a great grandmother and great grandfather that are buried in the Six Miles Baptist Church Cemetery. It has not only been passed down thru the family, their death certificates state also that they are buried in this cemetary. Family say they are in unmarked graves.
