Brooking Cemetery Section 33, Township 49, Range 32W Abstract records show that the land on which Brooking Cemetery is located, was entered by James Kimsey from the Government, December 10, 1831. James Kimsey and his wife, Hannah Kimsey, deeded it to Alvin Brooking, April 13, 1839, “eight hundred acres, more or less,” for a consideration of $5,000.00.

The first burial was that of Mrs. John Herndon, a relative of Judge Brooking, in 1844. Mrs. Marcus Pendleton recalls that an old neighbor related the incident of one morning meeting Alvin Brooking with an ax over his shoulder. He said there had been a death in the family and he was going out to locate a burying ground. He said there had been a death in the family and he was going out to locate a burying ground. The Brooking slaves built a stone wall around the plot. The wall is still standing, and marks the original burying grounds.

Alvin Brooking had three children - a son, Henry C. Brooking; two daughters, Serena Brooking, who married William C. Debord, and after his death married Logan Pendleton; and Mary Brooking, who married John T. Campbell.

Alvin Brooking died November 30, 1857, and his son, Henry C. Brooking, in accordance with his father's request, completed the wall and cared for the cemetery. There are twenty members of the family and two slaves buried within the inclosed plot. In later years a few friends were buried outside the family burying ground.

Henry C. Brooking inherited this land, and in order to protect the graves, formed the Brooking Cemetery Association, and deeded five acres to the Association. A Charter was granted the Association by the State, May 8, 1894. The By-laws for the Association were adopted by the Trustees at their first annual meeting, June 5, 1894. “The Trustees of the Brooking Cemetery Association met in first regular meeting at Raytown, Jackson County, Missouri, this, the first Saturday in November, 1894, and proceeded to elect officers for said association for the ensuing year. The Ballot being taken resulted in the election of Henry C. Brooking as President, John T. Campbell as Secretary, Robert Pendleton as Treasurer.” (This record was copied from the Association minute book.)

After platting the land, Henry C. Brooking gave a lot to each of his nephews and nieces, and also to some of his friends. After his death, his widow deeded the adjoining thirty-five acres to the Cemetery Association.

After the organization of the Cemetery Association, the Brooking Cemetery was open to the public, and bodies from several of the old pioneer family burying grounds were removed to this cemetery.
