The photos at right are
from a scrapbook kept by my mother, Doris LONG, while a teacher at
Pleasant Grove School from about 1934 to 1936. She began her teaching
career at age 19 at Pleasant Grove School, located approximately 2 1/2
miles west of Cole Junction on the Boonville Road (Highway 179 now). She
was hired by the president of the school board for the little school,
Luther LANDRUM, and then boarded with Luther's brother, Lawrence LANDRUM
and his wife Lena PIRNER LANDRUM and family. There were two teachers for the school, and both boarded with the Lawrence LANDRUM family. The other teacher was Miss JONES (sorry, I don't recall her first name!) who taught the younger kids. The young women joined the family for meals and occasional card games, and worked by lamp light during the evenings. The home where they boarded was located just a short walk from the school house. As fate would have it, Doris eventually met Lawrence and Luther's baby brother, Leslie LANDRUM at a pie supper, and the rest, they say, is history. They were married in 1939. The last I knew, the building was still standing and had been converted to a dwelling. Text and photographs submitted by: Jean Landrum Christian |
