Took Poison
Alex Waters Ended
His Misery With Strychnine. "I did this with my own hand to end my
misery." This was the substance of a note found scrawled on a piece of paper in
the pocket of a dead man picked up early Tuesday morning on the river front near
the ferry landing. Beside the dead man was a whiskey bottle almost drained, but
which contained a few crystalizations which on test proved to be strychnine. The
body was removed to the undertaking rooms of Mr. John Heinrichs, where a post
mortem inquest was held. It was discovered that the deceased was Alex Waters of
Osage County, and every indication went to suggest premeditated suicide. It was
learned that Waters had purchased the poison at Fischer's drug store on Monday.
Waters came up from Osage City Monday on the local and drew his money from Mr.
George Ramsey for some work he had done in the tie business in Osage City. He
spent the night with levee residents, and must have taken the poison some time
during the night and lay down and died in agony on the river bank. The deceased
leaves a family in Loose Creek consisting of a wife and seven children. The wife
of the deceased had been sick a great deal lately, and it is supposed that this
prompted the deceased to the deed. The deceased was a poor man and it is likely
that the remains will be interred here.
My great-grandfather's (John
Jackson Waters) brother. Parents were John H. and Mary Waters of
Boone County.
